Word Meanings:

  • Mu'aqqibat (مُعَقِّبَات): Angels who succeed one another in succession, taking turns in shifts.
  • Min bayni yadayhi wa min khalfihi (مِن بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ): From in front of him and from behind him.
  • Yahfazunahu (يَحْفَظُونَهُ): They guard and protect him.
  • Min amrillah (مِنْ أَمْرِ اللَّهِ): By Allah's command and permission.
  • Su'an (سُوءًا): Harm, punishment, or calamity.
  • Min walin (مِن وَالٍ): Any protector, guardian, or one who manages affairs.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Every human being is accompanied by angels appointed by Allah. These angels take turns — some by day and some by night — continuously succeeding one another in guarding the person from the front and from behind. They protect him by Allah's command from various harms and misfortunes, and they also record his deeds, whether good or bad. This is a profound sign of Allah's mercy and care for His creation — that He has not left them unprotected or unattended. However, when Allah's decree of death or calamity arrives, these angels withdraw, for nothing can repel what Allah has willed.

Then comes one of the most powerful and transformative principles in the Qur'an: "Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves." This means that the blessings and good conditions you enjoy — health, security, prosperity, and peace — are not taken away arbitrarily. When a people turn away from gratitude, obedience, and righteousness toward sin, ingratitude, and transgression, they themselves initiate the process of their own decline. The change begins from within: when hearts become corrupt, actions follow, and when actions corrupt, the blessings are withdrawn. This is both a warning and an invitation — a call to self-reflection and inner reform.

And when Allah intends harm or punishment for a people due to their persistent wrongdoing, there is absolutely no force in the universe that can repel it. No power, no wealth, no status, and no intercessor can stand against Allah's will. And they will have no protector besides Allah to whom they can turn for help in that moment.

This verse carries a profound message of hope and responsibility. It tells you that your destiny is not a matter of blind fate — you have the power to change your condition by changing yourself. If you find yourself in difficulty, look within and reform your heart, your intentions, and your actions. If you are enjoying blessings, protect them through gratitude and obedience. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has placed the key to your transformation in your own hands. He is always ready to receive those who turn back to Him, to forgive those who repent, and to elevate those who strive to better themselves. Let this be a call to action — purify your intentions, strengthen your faith, and fill your life with deeds that please your Lord. For when you draw closer to Allah, He draws even closer to you, and His protection and mercy encompass you from every side.

12هُوَ الَّذِي يُرِيكُمُ الْبَرْقَ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَيُنشِئُ السَّحَابَ الثِّقَالَ
It is He who shows you lightening, [causing] fear and aspiration, and generates the heavy clouds.
And the thunder exalts [Allah] with praise of Him - and the angels [as well] from fear of Him - and He sends thunderbolts and strikes therewith whom He wills while they dispute about Allah; and He is severe in assault.
