Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أَسَرَّ الْقَوْلَ (kept the saying secret): concealed the speech or kept it hidden in the heart.
  • جَهَرَ بِهِ (made it public): spoke it aloud openly.
  • مُسْتَخْفٍ بِاللَّيْلِ (hidden by night): one who conceals himself and his deeds under the cover of darkness.
  • سَارِبٌ بِالنَّهَارِ (going openly by day): one who moves freely and visibly on his path in the broad daylight.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse reveals a profound truth about the all-encompassing knowledge of Allah Almighty—a truth that brings both comfort and accountability to every soul. Allah tells us that He treats as equal, in His perfect knowledge, the one who whispers a word secretly in his heart and the one who declares it aloud before multitudes. Likewise, the one who hides his actions in the depth of the night, seeking concealment from all eyes, and the one who walks openly in the brightness of the day, with all his deeds visible—both are fully known to Allah.

There is no difference for Allah between the secret and the public, the hidden and the manifest. The darkness of the night does not veil anything from His sight, nor does the light of day add anything to His awareness. He knows the innermost thoughts that cross a person's mind, the quiet words spoken in solitude, and every deed done in the shadows—just as clearly as He knows the loudest proclamation and the most visible act under the sun.

This verse also carries a subtle warning to those who harbor ill intentions and think they can conceal them. Some people, as mentioned by the companion Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), are people of suspicion and sin—they hide their misdeeds at night, but when morning comes, they walk among people pretending to be innocent and free of any wrongdoing. Yet Allah knows their true state, and nothing escapes His knowledge.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear believer, ponder this magnificent truth: the Creator who fashioned the heavens and the earth, who knows the whisper of every soul and the fall of every leaf, is fully aware of your every word, your every action, and your every intention. This knowledge is not to frighten you, but to elevate you. When you know that Allah sees you and hears you at all times, your faith becomes alive, your worship becomes sincere, and your heart becomes vigilant.

If you have done good in secret, know that Allah sees it and will reward you abundantly—for the hidden charity and the quiet prayer are beloved to Him. And if you have erred in the darkness of the night, know that His mercy is greater than your sin, and His door of repentance is open before you. He knows your struggle, your weakness, and your sincere return to Him.

So let this verse fill you with awe and hope. Let it remind you that you are never alone, never unseen, and never forgotten. The One who knows all things is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving. Turn to Him with a pure heart, and let your secret and your public life both bear witness to His greatness. For indeed, in the sight of Allah, the hidden and the manifest are equal—and His knowledge encompasses all that you are and all that you do.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Ar-Ra'd

Allah knows what every female carries and what the wombs lose [prematurely] or exceed. And everything with Him is by due measure.
[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted.
It is the same [to Him] concerning you whether one conceals [his] speech or one publicizes it and whether one is hidden by night or conspicuous [among others] by day.
For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.
It is He who shows you lightening, [causing] fear and aspiration, and generates the heavy clouds.
