Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿAlāmāt (عَلَامَاتٍ): Landmarks, visible signs, or natural features placed on earth—such as mountains, valleys, rivers, and distinct rock formations—that guide travelers during the day.
  • Al-Najm (النَّجْم): The stars, specifically the celestial bodies used for navigation and orientation at night.
  • Yah'tadūn (يَهْتَدُونَ): They find their way, they are guided, or they orient themselves correctly.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah reminds us of yet another profound blessing from His infinite mercy: He has placed clear landmarks upon the earth—mountains, hills, rivers, and other natural signs—so that travelers can find their way during the daylight hours. These are not random features; they are divinely ordained waypoints that guide people through unfamiliar terrain, preventing them from losing their path.

Then, Allah mentions an even more remarkable sign: the stars. At night, when the landmarks of the earth become obscured by darkness, Allah has adorned the sky with countless stars. These celestial bodies serve as a reliable compass for humanity. The Arabs, especially the Quraysh, were renowned for their extensive journeys for trade—traveling to Syria in the summer and Yemen in the winter. They depended heavily on the stars to navigate the vast deserts, where no roads or signs existed. By observing the positions and movements of the stars, they could determine directions, locate water sources, and time their travels safely.

This guidance is not limited to physical travel alone. The stars also remind us of the Creator’s perfect design and His care for His creatures. Just as He guides us through the darkness of the night with stars, He guides us through the darkness of ignorance and confusion with His prophets, His revealed books, and the light of faith. The One who placed these celestial lamps in the sky is the same One who sent down the Qur’an as a guiding light for humanity.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: if Allah has been so gracious as to provide you with physical guidance through landmarks and stars, how much greater is His guidance for your soul and your eternal journey? The stars that guide you through the desert are but a tiny fraction of His mercy. He has also placed within your heart the fitrah (natural inclination to know Him), and He has sent messengers and scriptures to illuminate your path toward Him.

So, when you look up at the night sky and see the stars twinkling above you, let that sight remind you of the One who created them. Let it inspire you to seek His guidance in every aspect of your life. Just as the traveler trusts the stars to reach his destination, trust in Allah’s guidance—through the Qur’an and the Sunnah—to reach the ultimate destination: His pleasure and His Paradise. Indeed, the One who guides you through the vastness of the desert is more than capable of guiding you through the journey of life and the darkness of the grave. Turn to Him, and you will never be lost.

📜 Verse 14-18 — An-Nahl

And it is He who subjected the sea for you to eat from it tender meat and to extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through it, and [He subjected it] that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.
And He has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it shift with you, and [made] rivers and roads, that you may be guided,
And landmarks. And by the stars they are [also] guided.
Then is He who creates like one who does not create? So will you not be reminded?
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
