Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:
This blessed verse introduces the magnificent month of Ramadan, a month unlike any other in the sight of Allah. It was in this very month, specifically on the blessed Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr), that the Quran—the final, eternal revelation—was sent down from the Preserved Tablet to the lowest heaven, ready to be conveyed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over twenty-three years. This Quran is not just a book; it is a complete guidance for all of humanity, leading them out of the darkness of ignorance and misguidance into the light of faith and righteousness. Within its verses lie clear proofs and evidences of Allah's oneness, the truth of His messengers, and the wisdom of His laws. It is also the Furqan—the ultimate Criterion that distinguishes between what is halal (lawful) and haram (unlawful), between truth and falsehood, and between the path of success and the path of ruin.
Therefore, the command is clear and direct: whoever is present during this month, being resident in their homeland and in good health, must fast its days. Fasting is not merely abstaining from food and drink; it is a spiritual training that purifies the soul, strengthens patience, and develops empathy for the less fortunate. However, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made exceptions. If one is ill and fasting would worsen their condition, or if one is on a journey and finds it difficult to fast, they are permitted to break the fast. Yet, they must make up for the missed days at a later time, ensuring that the full count of the month is completed.
This concession reveals a profound truth about Islamic law: Allah desires ease for His servants, not hardship. He does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Every ruling in Islam is designed to bring benefit and remove harm. The permission to break the fast during illness or travel is not a sign of weakness but a manifestation of Allah's love and care for His creation. He wants you to complete the prescribed number of days so that you may reap the full spiritual rewards of the month. He also wants you to glorify Him with the Takbir on the day of Eid al-Fitr, thanking Him for guiding you to this noble act of worship and for giving you the strength to complete it. The ultimate goal is that you become among those who are truly grateful—grateful for the gift of faith, the gift of the Quran, and the gift of Ramadan.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, look at the beauty of this religion! Allah has made fasting an obligation, but He has also made it easy. He knows your circumstances, your struggles, and your limitations. He does not want to burden you; He wants to elevate you. When you fast, you are not just obeying a command—you are entering a divine school of self-discipline, gratitude, and closeness to Allah. The Quran was revealed in this month, so increase your recitation and reflection upon it. Let Ramadan be a turning point in your life, a month where you break free from bad habits and embrace righteousness. And when you complete the fast, let your heart overflow with gratitude, and let your tongue glorify Allah, for He has guided you to a path that leads to eternal success. This is the mercy of your Lord—embrace it with love and sincerity, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
