Tafsir (Explanation):
When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked by his companions about Allah — “Is He near, so we should whisper to Him, or far, so we should call out loudly?” — Allah revealed this verse as a direct and tender answer: “And when My servants ask you about Me — indeed, I am near.”
This is a profound declaration of Allah’s closeness to His creation. He is near to them through His perfect knowledge — nothing escapes His awareness, not even the faintest whisper of the heart. He is near through His response — He hears every supplication and answers every sincere caller. There is no need for intermediaries, no need for loud voices, no need for elaborate rituals. The servant can call upon his Lord at any moment, in any place, and find Him ever-present and ever-responsive.
Allah then says: “I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me.” This is a promise from the Lord of the worlds — a promise that is never broken. When a servant raises his hands in supplication, sincerely turning to Allah with a truthful heart, Allah answers. The answer may come in the form of immediate fulfillment, or it may come as protection from a greater harm, or it may be stored as a reward for the Hereafter — but the response is guaranteed, for Allah is Generous and Kind.
Then comes the divine command: “So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that they may be rightly guided.” This is the beautiful reciprocal relationship between the servant and his Lord. Just as the servant calls upon Allah, Allah calls upon the servant — to obedience, to faith, to righteousness. The servant’s response to Allah is through obedience to His commands and avoidance of His prohibitions. The servant’s belief in Allah is the foundation upon which this relationship is built. When the servant fulfills these two duties — obedience and faith — he attains the ultimate goal: guidance (rushd) — the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood, to navigate life’s affairs with wisdom, and to achieve success in both this world and the Hereafter.
This verse carries a beautiful and heartwarming message for every believer: You are never alone. Your Lord is closer to you than you can imagine. He knows your struggles, hears your whispers, and responds to your calls. So turn to Him with confidence, obey Him with sincerity, and believe in Him with certainty — and you will find the path to true guidance and lasting peace.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is an open invitation from your Creator. He is not distant or unreachable — He is near, waiting for you to call upon Him. No matter how many mistakes you have made, no matter how far you have wandered, His door is always open. Begin your journey today by turning to Him in supplication, and let this beautiful connection transform your life. The One who created you, sustains you, and loves you more than a mother loves her child — He is just a prayer away. Call upon Him, and you will find that He has already answered.
