Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Shu'ub (شُعُوبًا): Nations or large groups of people, larger than tribes.
  • Qaba'il (قَبَائِلَ): Tribes, which are subdivisions of nations.
  • Li-ta'arafu (لِتَعَارَفُوا): So that you may come to know one another.
  • Atqakum (أَتْقَاكُمْ): The most righteous among you, the one who fears Allah most and is most obedient to Him.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O mankind! Allah addresses all of humanity here, not just a specific group, to establish a universal principle that transcends race, ethnicity, and social status. He reminds us that He created us all from a single male — our father Adam (peace be upon him) — and a single female — our mother Hawwa' (Eve). This means that every human being on the face of the earth shares the same origin, the same parents, and therefore the same fundamental dignity and worth. There is no room for pride based on lineage, color, or nationality, because we are all branches of the same tree.

Then Allah says that He made us into different nations and tribes. This diversity is not a source of conflict or superiority; rather, it is a divine arrangement so that people may recognize one another, cooperate, and fulfill each other's rights. Imagine a beautiful garden filled with different flowers — each one adds to the beauty and harmony. Similarly, the variety of languages, cultures, and backgrounds among humanity is a sign of Allah's wisdom and power, meant to enrich human interaction, not to divide us.

The most crucial part of this verse comes next: "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you." This is the ultimate standard of honor — not wealth, not beauty, not lineage, not power, but taqwa (God-consciousness). Taqwa is the inner quality that drives a person to obey Allah, avoid sin, and treat others with kindness and justice. It is the only measure that truly elevates a person in the sight of Allah, and it is something that no one can claim for another — only Allah knows who truly possesses it.

Finally, Allah concludes with two of His beautiful names: Al-'Aleem (the All-Knowing) and Al-Khabeer (the All-Aware). This means that Allah knows everything about His creation — both what is apparent and what is hidden in the hearts. He knows who is truly righteous and who merely pretends to be. No act of goodness is hidden from Him, and no act of hypocrisy escapes His knowledge.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a powerful call to unity and brotherhood. In a world where people are often judged by their skin color, nationality, or social status, Islam comes with a revolutionary message: your worth is not determined by any worldly measure, but by your relationship with your Creator. This teaching liberates the human soul from the chains of prejudice and arrogance. It tells the poor that they can be the most honorable, and it tells the rich that their wealth means nothing without righteousness.

Dear reader, this is the beauty of Islam — it elevates the humble servant who fears Allah above the mighty king who disobeys Him. It opens the door of honor to every person, regardless of their background, as long as they strive to purify their hearts and actions. So let us compete, not in wealth or status, but in righteousness and good deeds. Let us look at others with respect, knowing that they may be more beloved to Allah than we are. And let us remember that Allah, the All-Knowing and All-Aware, sees everything and will reward every sincere effort. This is the path to true nobility — a nobility that lasts forever in the Hereafter, unlike the fleeting honors of this world.

📜 Verse 11-15 — Al-Hujurat

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
The bedouins say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."
The believers are only the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
