Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zann (الظن): Suspicion or assumption about others.
- Tajassasu (تجسسوا): Spying, seeking out the private faults and secrets of others.
- Ghibah (غيبة): Backbiting—mentioning a Muslim brother or sister in a way they would dislike if they heard it, even if what is said is true.
Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed to His guidance! Distance yourselves from harboring many suspicions about fellow believers. Indeed, some suspicion is a sin—especially suspicion of those whose outward state appears righteous, without any solid evidence or clear indication to justify it. Such baseless assumptions breed mistrust and destroy the bonds of brotherhood.
And do not spy on one another, nor seek out the private weaknesses, faults, or hidden matters of others. Allah has concealed these things for a reason, and prying into them only leads to harm and discord.
And do not backbite one another. Would any of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would surely abhor that—so abhor backbiting, for it is exactly that: consuming the honor and dignity of your brother in his absence, just as a corpse is consumed. The revulsion you feel at the thought of eating dead flesh should mirror the revulsion you feel toward speaking ill of another believer.
And fear Allah in all that He has commanded and forbidden. Indeed, Allah is Most Accepting of Repentance, Most Merciful to His believing servants. Whoever has fallen into these sins should turn back to Him sincerely, for His mercy embraces those who repent and mend their ways.
A Call to the Believers:
This noble verse is a profound lesson in social ethics and spiritual purification. It teaches us that the heart of a believer should be a sanctuary of good thoughts toward others, not a breeding ground for suspicion. Imagine a community where every person thinks well of the other, where privacy is respected, and where tongues are guarded from harming anyone's honor—what peace and harmony would prevail!
Islam elevates the dignity of the believer to such a degree that harming another's reputation is equated with cannibalism—an image so powerful that it shakes the soul. This is the beauty of the Qur'an: it addresses our hearts with vivid imagery to steer us away from destructive habits.
Let this verse inspire you to be a person of good assumptions, a protector of others' secrets, and a guardian of your tongue. And if you have ever slipped into these sins, know that the door of repentance is wide open. Allah is At-Tawwab, the One who turns to His servants with forgiveness, and Ar-Rahim, the Most Merciful. Return to Him, and He will purify your heart and elevate your rank in this life and the next.
