Surah Al-An'am — Verse 151

The first and greatest prohibition is shirk — associating anything with Allah in worship. This means that all forms of worship, whether inward (like fear, hope, and reliance) or outward (like prayer, supplication, and sacrifice), must be directed exclusively to Allah alone. No partner, no intermediary, no created being shares in His exclusive right to worship.

The second command is kindness and excellence toward parents (Ihsaan). This is mentioned immediately after the prohibition of shirk, highlighting its immense importance in Islam. It encompasses speaking gently to them, spending on them, supplicating for them, and serving them with love and respect — especially in their old age.

The third prohibition addresses a dark practice of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah): killing one's children out of fear of poverty. Some would bury their daughters alive; others would kill their sons fearing destitution. Allah reassures them with a profound truth: *"We provide for you and for them."* The provision of every soul is guaranteed by Allah, so poverty is never a justification for such a heinous act.

The fourth prohibition is approaching all immoral acts (fawaahish) — whether committed openly or secretly. This includes zina (unlawful sexual relations), theft, slander, and every other grave sin. The verse emphasizes that even the *approach* to such acts is forbidden, meaning one should not even take steps that lead toward them, let alone commit them. The pagans of Jahiliyyah would publicly condemn open immorality but privately indulge in it — Allah forbids both.

The fifth prohibition is taking a life that Allah has declared sacred, except through legal right. This right is limited to three cases: legal retribution (qisas) for murder, execution for adultery after being married (stoning), and execution for apostasy from Islam. Beyond these, no one may take another's life.
