Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- هَلُمَّ (Halumma): A call meaning "bring" or "produce" — an invitation to present something.
- شُهَدَاءَكُمُ (Shuhadā'akum): Your witnesses — those who would testify on your behalf.
- يَعْدِلُونَ (Ya'dilūn): They equate — meaning they set up partners with Allah, associating others with Him in worship.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to these polytheists who declare certain cattle and crops forbidden while claiming that Allah Himself made them unlawful: "Bring forth your witnesses who can testify that Allah truly prohibited what you have declared forbidden." If they do come forward with such testimony — and they will only be lying — then do not accept their testimony, do not affirm it, and do not stand with them in it. Their claim is pure falsehood, for Allah never prohibited what He has made lawful, nor did He legalize what He has forbidden.
Then Allah instructs His Prophet — and through him, every believer — to never follow the whims and desires of those who have rejected His signs and revelations. These are people who twist the truth to suit their own inclinations, declaring things lawful or unlawful based on their personal preferences rather than divine guidance. Nor should you follow those who do not believe in the Hereafter — for they have no fear of accountability and no hope of reward — and who, worst of all, equate others with their Lord, worshipping false deities alongside Him.
How could anyone of sound mind follow people whose relationship with their Creator is so corrupt? They have denied the very signs that point to His oneness and wisdom, and they have turned away from the reality of the life to come. Their judgments are built on sand, and their testimony is void.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim: truth is not established by witnesses alone, but by alignment with what Allah has revealed. When people claim divine authority for their own innovations — whether in matters of halal and haram or in matters of creed — the believer must stand firm upon the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger. Do not be swayed by those who reject Allah's signs, and do not let the desires of those who deny the Hereafter pull you away from the straight path. Your Lord is One, His law is clear, and His promise is true. Hold fast to His guidance, and you will never be led astray.
