- Famtahinuhunna (فامتحنوهن): Test them and examine their sincerity in claiming faith.
- Ujurahunna (أجورهن): Their dowries (mahr) that are given to them upon marriage.
- 'Isam (عصم): The bonds of marriage; the ties that hold a marriage together.
- Al-Kawafir (الكوافر): Disbelieving women (plural of kafirah).
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! When believing women come to you as emigrants, leaving the lands of disbelief to seek refuge in the lands of Islam, then test them to verify the truthfulness of their claim to faith. Ask them about the reasons for their emigration, and observe their words and actions, for Allah alone knows what is truly in their hearts—nothing is hidden from Him. If, after this examination, you come to know—based on the signs and evidence that become apparent to you—that they are sincere believers, then do not return them to their disbelieving husbands. For these believing women are no longer lawful for those disbelieving men, nor are those disbelieving men lawful for them. The bond of marriage between them has been severed by the difference of faith.
And in this situation, you must return to those disbelieving husbands the dowries they had paid to these women when they married them. There is no sin upon you, O believers, to marry these women yourselves, provided that you give them their own dowries as a right upon you. This is a matter of justice and fairness.
Likewise, do not hold onto the marriage bonds of disbelieving women who remain in disbelief or who have apostatized from Islam and joined the enemies. Let them go, and ask the disbelievers to return the dowries you had paid to those women who left you, and let the disbelievers ask you to return the dowries they had paid to the women who came to you as believers. This mutual settlement of dowries is the judgment of Allah, and He judges between you with perfect wisdom and justice. And Allah is All-Knowing of your conditions and All-Wise in His commands.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a shining example of the justice and mercy of Islam. See how Allah, in His infinite wisdom, protected the rights of both parties—the believers and even the disbelievers—by commanding the return of dowries so that no one would be wronged. Islam does not call to injustice even toward those who oppose it; rather, it establishes fairness in every affair. This is the beauty of our religion: it honors the believer, safeguards the family, and upholds truth in all circumstances. When you reflect on this, let your heart be filled with gratitude for a Lord who legislates with perfect knowledge and boundless mercy. And let it inspire you to embody this same justice and compassion in your own life, for indeed, the best of people are those who bring benefit to others and uphold what is right.
