Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • فاتكم (fātakum): Something that eluded you or escaped from you.
  • فعاقبتم (faʿāqabtum): You gained spoils of war or took compensation from the enemy; it also carries the meaning of exacting a penalty or taking retribution.
  • مثل ما أنفقوا (mithl mā anfaqū): The equivalent of what they spent — i.e., the dowries (mahr) they had given to their wives.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses a specific situation that arose during the early Muslim community, offering both a practical ruling and a profound lesson in justice and mutual care among believers.

The scenario is this: if a Muslim man's wife leaves him and joins the disbelievers — whether by renouncing her faith (apostasy) or by fleeing to enemy territory — and the husband has lost the dowry he paid her, and the disbelievers do not return that dowry to him, then the verse instructs the Muslim community to compensate him. When the Muslims later gain spoils of war from the disbelievers — whether from those very people or from others — they are to give this man an amount equal to the dowry he had spent on his wife who left him. This is a beautiful system of social solidarity: the loss of one believer is not left unaddressed; rather, the community steps in to restore his rights from the wealth that comes into their hands.

The verse then concludes with a powerful reminder: "And fear Allah, in whom you are believers." This is not merely an admonition — it is a call to align one's actions with the very faith one professes. If you truly believe in Allah, then your belief must manifest in obedience to His commands and avoidance of His prohibitions. The One who legislated this just system is the same One who created you, sustains you, and will hold you to account. Your faith in Him should naturally lead you to reverence Him and fulfill His injunctions.

This verse beautifully demonstrates how Islam cares for the rights of every individual, even in times of conflict and hardship. It shows that the Muslim community is like one body: when one part suffers, the whole feels the pain and responds. It also teaches us that justice is not abstract — it is practical, tangible, and implemented through concrete measures that protect the vulnerable and restore what is lost.

Reflect, dear reader, on the depth of this guidance. Allah did not leave the wronged husband to fend for himself; He legislated a remedy. And He did not stop at the material compensation — He elevated the believer's heart to consciousness of Him. This is the hallmark of Quranic guidance: it addresses both the outward circumstances and the inward state, balancing worldly justice with spiritual awareness. Let this verse inspire you to trust in Allah's wisdom, to care for your fellow believers, and to let your faith transform your actions — for true belief is not a word on the tongue, but a light that guides every step of your life.

📜 Verse 9-13 — Al-Mumtahanah

Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them. Allah is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give the disbelievers what they have spent. And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation. And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them ask for what they have spent. That is the judgement of Allah; He judges between you. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And if you have lost any of your wives to the disbelievers and you subsequently obtain [something], then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor will they steal, nor will they commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs, nor will they disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness for them of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allah has become angry. They have despaired of [reward in] the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of [meeting] the inhabitants of the graves.
