Key Words and Meanings:
- "Li 'iddatihinna" (لِعِدَّتِهِنَّ): For their waiting period ('iddah) — meaning at the time when the 'iddah can begin, i.e., during a state of purity (tuhr) in which no sexual intercourse has occurred, or during a clearly visible pregnancy.
- "Ahsu al-'iddah" (وَأَحْصُوا الْعِدَّةَ): Count the 'iddah precisely — keep an accurate record of the menstrual cycles or months, so that the waiting period is fully known.
- "Fahishah mubayyinah" (فَاحِشَةٍ مُبَيِّنَةٍ): A clear, manifest immoral act — such as adultery or open indecency.
- "Hudud Allah" (حُدُودُ اللَّهِ): The boundaries and laws set by Allah, which must not be transgressed.
- "Yuhdithu amran" (يُحْدِثُ أَمْرًا): To bring about a new situation or circumstance — such as a change of heart leading to reconciliation.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, Allah addresses you and, through you, the entire believing community: when you intend to divorce your wives, do so in a manner that is correct and pleasing to Allah. Divorce should be pronounced at the very beginning of the 'iddah — that is, during a time of purity in which you have not been intimate with her, or when she is clearly pregnant. This ensures that the waiting period is clear and that there remains an opportunity for reconciliation.
And be precise in counting the 'iddah. Know exactly how many cycles or months have passed, so that you are fully aware of when the waiting period ends. This knowledge is essential, for it opens the door to returning to your wife if your hearts soften and you wish to reconcile.
Fear Allah, your Lord, in all of this. Do not let anger or haste lead you to harm your wives. Once you have pronounced divorce, do not expel them from the homes they live in, and they themselves must not leave — except if they commit a clear, manifest act of indecency. This is a protective measure, preserving dignity and giving space for reflection and possible reconciliation.
These rulings are the boundaries set by Allah. Whoever transgresses these boundaries has wronged his own soul, for he has exposed himself to Allah's displeasure and the consequences of disobedience. So be mindful, O believer — for you do not know. Perhaps Allah will bring about, after this divorce, a new situation: a change of heart, a renewed love, or a desire to reunite. By keeping the door open and following the proper procedure, you leave room for Allah's mercy to mend what seemed broken.
A Call to Reflect and Draw Near to Allah:
Dear believer, see how merciful and wise Allah is in His legislation! He does not leave you without guidance in matters that touch the very heart of family life. These laws are not restrictions to burden you — they are protections, safeguards for the sanctity of marriage and the dignity of both spouses. When you follow them, you align yourself with the Creator's design, and you open the door to His mercy. How beautiful it is that even in a moment of separation, Allah leaves a window for love to return! So hold fast to His commands, for in them lies your success in this life and the next. And never forget: the One who legislated these boundaries is the One who knows what is in your hearts — and He is always ready to guide you to what is best.
