Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fa-salli (فَصَلِّ): And pray — specifically, perform the prayer sincerely and completely.
- Li-Rabbika (لِرَبِّكَ): To your Lord alone — the One who created you, sustains you, and bestowed upon you the abundant good.
- Wa-nhar (وَانْحَرْ): And sacrifice — slaughter the sacrificial animal (such as the camel, cow, or sheep) for Allah alone.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse comes as a direct command from Allah to His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) after the mention of the great blessing of Al-Kawthar — the abundant good, which includes the heavenly river in Paradise and countless worldly and spiritual favors. In gratitude for these immense blessings, Allah instructs His Prophet to dedicate his worship entirely to his Lord.
The command has two parts. First: "Pray to your Lord" — meaning make your prayer sincerely and exclusively for Allah, especially the Eid prayer on the day of sacrifice (Yawm an-Nahr). Your entire prayer — its intention, its words, its actions — must be purified for Allah alone, free from any trace of showing off or seeking the approval of others.
Second: "And sacrifice" — meaning slaughter your sacrificial animals for Allah alone, in His name, and for His sake. This was a direct contrast to the practice of the polytheists of Makkah, who would sacrifice to their idols and false deities, placing the names of their gods upon their offerings. The believer is commanded to break away from this completely — their prayer, their sacrifice, their entire life is devoted to the One True God.
The verse beautifully connects worship with gratitude. When Allah gives us blessings — and He has given us so many — the natural response of a grateful heart is to turn to Him in prayer and devotion. The sacrifice, in particular, symbolizes complete submission: offering the best of what we have, our wealth and provisions, for the sake of Allah, just as Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was willing to sacrifice his beloved son in obedience to his Lord.
This verse also carries a profound message for every Muslim today: your worship — whether it is the daily prayers, the Eid prayer, or the sacrifice you offer — must be purely for your Lord. Not for show, not for tradition, not for the praise of people, but sincerely for Allah alone. When your heart is attached to Allah, your prayer becomes a source of peace, and your sacrifice becomes a means of drawing closer to Him.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear brother and sister in Islam — reflect on this beautiful command. Allah has given you so much: your health, your family, your provision, your faith. He has given you the greatest gift of all — the guidance to Islam and the love of His Messenger. In return, He asks you to pray to Him and to sacrifice for Him. This is not a burden; it is an honor and a privilege. When you stand in prayer, know that you are speaking directly to your Creator. When you offer your sacrifice, know that your devotion reaches Him before the blood reaches the ground. Let your entire life be a prayer — a continuous, sincere turning to your Lord in every moment, in every action, in every breath. This is the path of true success, and this is the way of the beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) — a way that leads to the river of Al-Kawthar in Paradise, where the believers will drink and never thirst again.
