Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shāni'aka (شَانِئَكَ): The one who hates you, despises you, or holds malice and enmity towards you.
- Al-Abtar (الأَبْتَر): The one who is cut off, severed, or deprived — one whose lineage, legacy, and influence are terminated, leaving no trace of goodness or remembrance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a direct and powerful response from Allah to those who mocked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by calling him "abtar" — meaning one whose male descendants had died, assuming his legacy would end with him. Allah turns the accusation back on them with absolute clarity: "Indeed, your hater — he is the one who is cut off."
The meaning is profound: the one who despises you, O Prophet, and despises the guidance and light you have brought, is himself the one whose trace is severed, whose name is erased from the pages of honor, and whose end is utter loss. Such a person is cut off from every good — from divine mercy, from lasting remembrance, and from any legacy of virtue. Even if such a person is mentioned after death, it is only with evil and disdain.
Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace be upon him) — though his sons passed away — was granted Al-Kawthar, an abundant river in Paradise, and his name is eternally linked with the testimony of faith, recited by millions daily until the end of time. His legacy is immortal, his message spreads across the globe, and his followers continue his mission. Thus, the one who thought the Prophet's line was cut off was himself the truly cut-off one, while the Prophet's light shines forever.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson of hope and reassurance for every believer. When you stand for truth and righteousness, there will always be those who mock, belittle, and wish for your downfall. But Allah's promise is certain: those who oppose His messengers and His message will themselves be forgotten, while the cause of truth will always prevail. Let this verse strengthen your heart — do not fear the hatred of others, for their schemes are nothing before Allah's decree. Hold firm to your faith, and know that the legacy of goodness you leave behind — through your character, your deeds, and your devotion — is what truly endures. The hater's name fades; the believer's light never dies.
