Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses the stubborn disbelievers who kept demanding extraordinary miracles from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), refusing to accept the Qur'an as a sufficient sign. They said: "Why don't you move the mountains with your recitation? Why don't you split the earth open with rivers? Why don't you bring the dead back to life to speak to us?"
Allah responds to their demands with a profound truth: even if there were a scripture by which mountains could be moved from their places, or the earth could be split open into flowing rivers and springs, or the dead could be brought back to life and speak — it would be this very Qur'an that possesses such qualities, for it is the ultimate in reminding and the pinnacle of warning. Yet even then, they would not believe, because their problem was not a lack of miracles — it was a sickness in their hearts.
The verse then establishes a fundamental principle: "But to Allah belongs all matters entirely." All affairs — including the sending of miracles, the granting of faith, and the timing of punishment — rest solely with Allah. He does what He wills, and His wisdom is beyond human comprehension.
Then comes a gentle yet profound admonition to the believers: "Have not those who believe known that if Allah had willed, He would have guided all mankind?" This is a powerful reminder that Allah is fully capable of forcing everyone to believe — but He has chosen to test humanity through free will, so that faith becomes a conscious choice rather than compulsion. The believers are being taught to trust in Allah's wisdom and not to be distressed by the disbelievers' rejection.
The verse concludes with a promise of divine justice: "And those who disbelieve will not cease to be struck by a calamity because of what they have done — or it descends near their homes — until the promise of Allah comes." This means that the disbelievers will continuously face punishments, defeats, and hardships as a consequence of their own evil deeds — whether directly upon them or close to their dwellings — until Allah's promised victory for the believers arrives, such as the conquest of Makkah. And Allah never breaks His promise.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, contemplate the greatness of this verse! The Qur'an that we hold in our hands today is the very book that, had Allah willed, could have moved mountains and revived the dead. Its true miracle lies not in physical transformations, but in its power to transform hearts — to bring a dead soul to life, to move a hardened heart from darkness to light, to split open the hardness of ignorance and let the rivers of knowledge flow.
The greatest miracle is the one you can experience right now: open the Qur'an, read it with reflection, and watch how it changes you from within. That is the living miracle that continues until the Day of Judgment. And know with certainty that Allah's promise is true — His help comes to those who believe, and His justice reaches those who reject, no matter how long it takes. So hold firm to your faith, trust in Allah's plan, and never despair of His wisdom.
