Word Meanings:

  • Al-Hikmah (الحكمة): Wisdom; speaking and acting with sound judgment, propriety, and insight, placing matters in their proper context.
  • Al-Maw'izah al-Hasanah (الموعظة الحسنة): Good, beautiful exhortation; sincere advice given with gentleness and compassion that moves the heart toward goodness.
  • Jadilhum (وجادلهم): Argue or debate with them; engage in discussion and dialogue.
  • Allati hiya ahsan (بالتي هي أحسن): In the best and most excellent manner—with politeness, kindness, and the most refined approach.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O noble Messenger, and all who follow him in the path of truth—call people to the religion of your Lord, Islam, which is the straight path leading to eternal success. Let your call be built upon *al-hikmah*—the profound wisdom that Allah has revealed in His Book and the Sunnah of His Prophet. This means addressing people according to their levels of understanding, choosing the right words at the right time, and presenting the truth with clarity and insight that penetrates hearts and minds.

Then, follow this with *al-maw'izah al-hasanah*—beautiful, heartfelt exhortation. Speak to people with gentleness and compassion, encouraging them toward goodness and warning them against evil in a way that touches their souls without harshness or reproach. Let your advice flow like a gentle stream that softens the hardest of hearts, for kindness in speech opens doors that force can never unlock.

And when dialogue becomes necessary—when people raise objections or engage in debate—then argue with them in the best possible manner. Use the most refined words, the most courteous tone, and the most logical reasoning. Avoid insults, mockery, or harshness, for the goal is not to defeat an opponent but to guide a soul toward its Creator. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was commanded to speak with such excellence that even his adversaries were moved by his character.

Know, dear reader, that your responsibility is only to convey the message with sincerity and excellence. Guidance itself rests solely with Allah. He alone knows who has strayed from His path and who has embraced it. He is fully aware of the misguided and the guided alike, and He will reward each according to their deeds. So do not let grief overwhelm you for those who turn away—your duty is to deliver, and His is to judge.

This verse is a timeless charter for every caller to Allah. It teaches us that the beauty of Islam is not only in its message but also in its method. When we invite others to this faith, we are not merely transmitting information—we are planting seeds of light in hearts, and the One who causes those seeds to grow is Allah Himself. So let your words be wise, your counsel be kind, and your debates be gracious. In this way, you embody the very mercy that Islam came to spread, and you become a living proof of its beauty to all who encounter you.

📜 Verse 123-127 — An-Nahl

Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allah.
The sabbath was only appointed for those who differed over it. And indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.
And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient.
And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your patience is not but through Allah. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.
