Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse establishes a profound principle of justice and mercy for the believers. Allah addresses the believers who have been wronged or attacked, granting them the right to seek retribution—but with a strict condition: the retaliation must be exactly proportionate to the harm inflicted, without any transgression or excess. If someone has harmed you in a specific way, you are permitted to respond in kind, but you are forbidden from exceeding that limit. This is a divine command that upholds justice and prevents cycles of vengeance from spiraling out of control.
However, the verse then elevates the believer to a higher station by stating that if you exercise patience and choose to forgive—especially when you are fully capable of taking revenge—then this act of forbearance is far better for you. It is better in this world because it brings peace to the heart, elevates your status among people, and often leads to reconciliation and divine support. It is better in the Hereafter because Allah rewards the patient with an immense, unbounded reward. The verse beautifully teaches that while justice is permitted, mercy and forgiveness are superior—and the one who forgives when he has the power to retaliate is following the noblest example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was described in the Qur'an as "a mercy to the worlds."
This guidance is a gift from Allah to His servants. It protects the Muslim community from falling into oppression, for even in retaliation, one must remain just. And it opens the door to a higher moral ground—the path of forgiveness—which purifies the soul, strengthens brotherhood, and draws the servant closer to his Lord. Reflect on this: Allah does not forbid you from defending your rights, but He lovingly points you toward what is even better for you. How merciful is our Lord, who always guides us to what brings us true success in both worlds!
