📖 English Meaning
And when Saul went forth with the soldiers, he said, "Indeed, Allah will be testing you with a river. So whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is indeed of me, excepting one who takes [from it] in the hollow of his hand." But they drank from it, except a [very] few of them. Then when he had crossed it along with those who believed with him, they said, "There is no power for us today against Goliath and his soldiers." But those who were certain that they would meet Allah said, "How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient."

The Interpretation:

When Talut (Saul), the king appointed by Allah for the Children of Israel, set out with his mighty army to face the formidable forces of Goliath (Jalut), he knew that the journey would be a test of faith and obedience. The army was large, but the true measure of its strength lay not in numbers, but in the hearts of its soldiers. As they marched through a scorching desert, the soldiers complained of intense thirst. At that critical moment, Allah, through His prophet Samuel (Shamwil), had already instructed Talut to lead them to a river. When they reached it, Talut delivered the divine decree: "Indeed, Allah will test you with a river."

This was a profound test of obedience versus desire. Talut declared, "Whoever drinks from it is not of me" — meaning, such a person would not be among his loyal companions for the battle, for their hearts were ruled by their immediate worldly needs rather than by the command of Allah. "And whoever does not taste it, then indeed, he is of me" — they would be his true brothers in arms, proving their trust in Allah's promise of victory. However, a concession was made: "Except one who scoops up a single handful with his hand." This was to distinguish between those who could control their desires and those who were enslaved by them. A single handful was permissible, a small allowance to quench the barest need, but drinking one's fill from the river was a sign of disobedience and a lack of faith in Allah's provision.

When the army reached the river, the scene was telling. The vast majority of the soldiers, overcome by thirst and impatience, rushed to the water and drank their fill, failing the test. Only a small, steadfast group remained patient and obedient, taking no more than a handful from the river. This small group, numbering around three hundred and thirteen men, was the true core of believers. They were the ones who understood that victory comes from Allah, not from the abundance of water or the size of the army.

After crossing the river, Talut and this faithful remnant looked ahead and saw the immense, well-equipped army of Goliath. The sheer scale of the enemy was intimidating. Some among the believers, seeing the overwhelming odds, said, "We have no power today against Goliath and his soldiers." Their hearts wavered, and they doubted their ability to prevail. But then, those who were deeply certain that they would meet their Lord on the Day of Judgment — those whose faith was unshakable — responded with words of profound wisdom and courage: "How many a small company has overcome a large company by the permission of Allah!" They reminded their brothers that the outcome of any battle is not determined by numbers, weapons, or resources, but by the will and support of Allah. History is filled with examples of small, faithful groups triumphing over vast, powerful armies. They concluded with a powerful reassurance: "And Allah is with the patient."

This verse is a timeless lesson for every believer. It teaches us that Allah tests us in various ways — through our wealth, our health, our desires, and our circumstances — to see who is truly sincere in their faith. The test of the river was not about water; it was about obedience. The test of Goliath's army was not about strength; it was about trust in Allah. The believers who passed the test were those who combined patience with certainty. They were patient in the face of thirst, patient in the face of fear, and certain in the promise of Allah's help.

Dear reader, reflect on your own life. Where is your "river"? What is the test that Allah has placed before you to see whether you will obey Him or follow your desires? And where is your "Goliath"? What challenge seems insurmountable in your life? Remember the words of those steadfast believers: "How many a small company has overcome a large company by the permission of Allah!" Your strength does not lie in your numbers, your wealth, or your abilities. Your true strength lies in your faith, your patience, and your unwavering trust in Allah. He is with the patient — He supports them, guides them, and grants them victory in ways they could never imagine. So be patient, be steadfast, and place your complete reliance on Allah, for He never abandons those who are true to Him.

📜 Verse 247-251 — Al-Baqarah

And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, Allah has sent to you Saul as a king." They said, "How can he have kingship over us while we are more worthy of kingship than him and he has not been given any measure of wealth?" He said, "Indeed, Allah has chosen him over you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. And Allah gives His sovereignty to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing [in favor] and Knowing."
And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, a sign of his kingship is that the chest will come to you in which is assurance from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron had left, carried by the angels. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers."
And when they went forth to [face] Goliath and his soldiers, they said, "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."
So they defeated them by permission of Allah, and David killed Goliath, and Allah gave him the kingship and prophethood and taught him from that which He willed. And if it were not for Allah checking [some] people by means of others, the earth would have been corrupted, but Allah is full of bounty to the worlds.
