Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yaghuddu (يَغُضُّوا): To lower, cast down, or restrain the gaze.
  • Absar (أَبْصَار): Sights or eyes.
  • Furuj (فُرُوج): Private parts; chastity.
  • Azka (أَزْكَى): More pure, more virtuous, more beneficial for spiritual growth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, command the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. Lowering the gaze means restraining the eyes from looking at what Allah has forbidden—whether it be women who are not lawful to them, or any sight that leads to temptation or sin. Guarding the private parts means protecting them from unlawful acts such as adultery, fornication, and exposing one's nakedness, as well as avoiding anything that leads to these sins.

This command is not merely a restriction; it is a divine prescription for spiritual purity and moral excellence. Lowering the gaze and guarding chastity are among the greatest means of purifying the heart, protecting one's honor, and preserving the dignity of the individual and society. When a believer restrains his eyes, he shields his heart from the poison of lustful glances that corrupt the soul and distract it from the remembrance of Allah.

Indeed, Allah is fully aware of all that you do—nothing escapes His knowledge, whether it is a fleeting glance, a hidden thought, or a private action. He knows the sincerity of your efforts to obey Him, and He will reward you accordingly. This awareness should instill in the believer a profound sense of accountability and mindfulness, knowing that the Creator and Sustainer of all things is ever watchful over His servants.

This verse is a beautiful invitation to a life of dignity and self-respect. It teaches us that true freedom lies not in following every desire, but in mastering our impulses for the sake of Allah. By obeying this command, the believer elevates his soul, earns the love of his Lord, and contributes to building a pure and virtuous society where trust, honor, and mutual respect prevail. Let every believer take this guidance to heart, for it is a key to peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 28-32 — An-Nur

And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back; it is purer for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.
There is no blame upon you for entering houses not inhabited in which there is convenience for you. And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
