📖 English Meaning
Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Qawwamun (قَوَّامُونَ): Those who stand firm in managing, caring for, and protecting; maintainers and guardians.
  • Faddala (فَضَّلَ): To grant excellence, preference, or superiority in specific qualities and responsibilities.
  • Qanitat (قَانِتَاتٌ): Devoutly obedient — obedient to Allah and to their husbands in what is right.
  • Hafizatun lil-ghayb (حَافِظَاتٌ لِّلْغَيْبِ): Guardians of the unseen — protecting their own chastity and their husband's wealth and honor in his absence.
  • Nushuz (نُشُوز): Rising up in defiance; a wife's aversion or rebellion against her husband's legitimate authority.
  • Uhjuruhunna (وَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ): Keep away from them — specifically, to separate from them in the bed.
  • Wa-dribuhunna (وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ): Strike them — a light, non-injurious tap as a last resort, not a beating.
  • Tabghu (تَبْغُوا): Seek or pursue — i.e., do not seek a way to harm or oppress them.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse establishes a beautiful framework for family life, rooted in justice, mercy, and clear roles. Allah, the All-Wise, declares that men are the protectors and maintainers of women — not out of superiority in worth or dignity, but because Allah has given men certain physical and emotional strengths, and has placed upon them the financial responsibility of providing for the family through the dowry (mahr) and ongoing maintenance (nafaqah). This is a responsibility, not a privilege — a heavy trust that men will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment.

Then Allah describes the righteous women — those who are truly pious. They are devoutly obedient to Allah, and as a natural fruit of that obedience, they are obedient to their husbands in what is good and lawful. They are guardians of the unseen: they protect their own chastity, their husband's wealth, his home, and his honor when he is away. This beautiful quality is a gift from Allah — it is by His protection and grace that such women are able to remain faithful and trustworthy. What an honor for a woman to be described this way by her Creator!

The verse then addresses the challenging situation of marital discord. When a wife shows signs of nushuz — that is, arrogance, defiance, or turning away from her marital duties — Allah, in His infinite wisdom, prescribes a gradual, escalating approach that prioritizes mercy and reconciliation at every step:

  1. First, admonish her with kind, wise words — remind her of Allah, of her duties, and of the sanctity of the marital bond. Speak to her heart with gentleness and sincerity.
  2. If that does not work, separate from her in the bed — this sends a powerful, non-verbal message that something is wrong, and it often awakens the love and longing that brings hearts back together.
  3. If that still does not resolve the issue, strike her lightly — and the scholars unanimously clarify that this means a symbolic, non-injurious tap that leaves no mark and causes no pain. It is a last resort, more symbolic than physical, intended to shake her out of her defiance — never to harm, humiliate, or abuse.

Then comes the crucial boundary: if she returns to obedience and harmony, then do not seek any way against her — no revenge, no grudges, no dwelling on the past, no unfair punishment. The door of reconciliation is wide open, and the husband is commanded to close the file of past disputes completely.

The verse concludes with a profound reminder: "Indeed, Allah is Ever Most High, Most Great." This is a warning to both spouses — especially to the husband who has been given authority. Remember that Allah is above you both. He sees everything. He is the ultimate protector of the oppressed. If you misuse your authority and wrong your wife, know that Allah is Greater than you, and He will hold you to account. Let this awareness fill your heart with taqwa (God-consciousness) and prevent any injustice.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is this divine guidance! Islam does not leave marriage to the whims of human emotion — it provides a complete, just, and merciful system. The husband is not a tyrant but a shepherd responsible for his flock. The wife is not a subordinate but a dignified partner whose rights are protected by Allah Himself. Even in times of conflict, the Quran prescribes a path that begins with gentle advice and ends with reconciliation — never with cruelty or oppression.

This verse teaches us that authority in Islam is always coupled with responsibility, and obedience is always coupled with dignity. The ultimate goal is a peaceful, loving home where both spouses worship Allah together and raise a righteous family. And for those who fear Allah and uphold His limits, He promises His help, His protection, and His reward.

Let us reflect: if every Muslim husband and wife implemented these divine instructions with wisdom and mercy, how many broken homes would be healed? How many divorces would be prevented? How many children would grow up in the warmth of a loving, God-conscious family? This is the beauty of Islam — a complete way of life that nurtures the soul, protects the family, and pleases the Lord of the Worlds.

📜 Verse 32-36 — An-Nisa

And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah of his bounty. Indeed Allah is ever, of all things, Knowing.
And for all, We have made heirs to what is left by parents and relatives. And to those whom your oaths have bound [to you] - give them their share. Indeed Allah is ever, over all things, a Witness.
And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Acquainted [with all things].
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.
