Word Meanings:
- Mawāli (مَوَالِي): Inheritors or heirs; those who are entitled to receive a share of the deceased's estate.
- ʿAqadat aymānukum (عَقَدَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ): Those with whom you have made a solemn covenant or oath, specifically referring to alliances of mutual support and inheritance that were practiced in the early period of Islam.
- Naṣībahum (نَصِيبَهُمْ): Their designated share or portion.
Tafsir (Explanation):
For every person, Allah has ordained heirs who are entitled to inherit from what parents and close relatives leave behind. This is a divine system of distribution that ensures justice and care for those who are closest to the deceased. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has established clear rights for each heir, so that wealth does not remain confined to a single individual or become a cause of discord among family members.
As for those with whom you have made solemn covenants and sworn oaths of alliance and mutual support, give them their due share. In the early days of Islam, such alliances were a means of inheritance, where people who were not blood relatives but had entered into binding agreements of brotherhood and support would inherit from one another. This practice was later abrogated by the revelation of the detailed inheritance laws (in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 75), which made blood relations and kinship the primary basis for inheritance. Nevertheless, the principle of honoring one's covenants and fulfilling promises remains a cornerstone of Islamic ethics—if you have made a pledge, you must honor it, and if you have agreed upon something lawful, you must fulfill it.
Indeed, Allah is Witness over all things. Nothing escapes His knowledge—neither your intentions, nor your actions, nor the covenants you make. He sees every contract you sign, every promise you utter, and every right you fulfill or neglect. This is both a reassurance and a warning: a reassurance that Allah will protect the rights of the oppressed and the weak, and a warning that those who withhold what is due to others, or who break their solemn oaths, will not escape His reckoning.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine legislation. Allah, the Most Merciful, has not left you without guidance in matters of wealth, family, and social obligations. He has established a system that balances the rights of individuals with the harmony of society. When you honor the rights of your relatives and fulfill your covenants, you are not merely following a legal code—you are building a society founded on trust, justice, and mutual care. And remember: Allah is always watching, always witnessing. Let this awareness fill your heart with sincerity, and let it motivate you to be among those who uphold rights and fulfill promises, for indeed, Allah loves those who are faithful to their trusts and covenants.
