And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Acquainted [with all things].

Word Meanings:

  • Shiqāq (شقاق): Deep discord, conflict, or estrangement between the spouses that threatens their marital bond.
  • Ḥakam (حَكَمًا): An arbitrator or judge appointed to resolve the dispute fairly.
  • Yuwaffiq (يُوَفِّقِ): To bring about harmony and reconciliation.

Explanation of the Verse:

O guardians of the spouses, if you fear that serious conflict has arisen between a husband and wife—reaching a point where their marriage may break apart—then do not leave them to drift toward destruction. Instead, appoint one fair and trustworthy arbitrator from the husband’s family and another from the wife’s family. These two arbitrators should investigate the matter, listen to both sides, and strive to determine what is truly in the best interest of the couple—whether that be reconciliation or, if necessary, a dignified separation. However, reconciliation is always the preferred and more beloved outcome.

If these two arbitrators sincerely desire to set things right, and they approach the situation with wisdom, patience, and goodwill, then Allah will bless their efforts and restore harmony between the spouses. The success of their mediation is not merely a matter of human skill—it is a divine gift granted to those who act with pure intentions. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, fully aware of every hidden detail in the hearts of His servants, and All-Aware of the true state of affairs that may not be visible to others.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This noble verse reveals the profound care Islam places on preserving the family—the very foundation of society. When conflict arises, the Qur’an does not leave spouses to suffer alone; it commands the community to step in with compassion and wisdom. Imagine the beauty of this guidance: two families coming together, not to take sides or fuel the fire, but to heal and rebuild. This is the mercy of Islam in action—a religion that values peace, justice, and love above all.

Dear believer, let this verse inspire you to be a source of reconciliation in your own family and community. When you see discord between spouses, do not remain silent or spread negativity. Instead, offer help, appoint wise mediators, and pray for Allah’s guidance. And if you are ever a mediator yourself, remember that your intention must be pure—seeking only what is good and pleasing to Allah. When hearts unite for His sake, He pours His blessings upon them, and what seemed impossible becomes possible by His grace.

Allah’s knowledge encompasses everything—the visible and the hidden, the spoken and the unspoken. So place your trust in Him, act with sincerity, and witness how He turns conflict into affection and estrangement into closeness. This is the promise of the All-Knowing, the All-Aware.

📜 Verse 33-37 — An-Nisa

And for all, We have made heirs to what is left by parents and relatives. And to those whom your oaths have bound [to you] - give them their share. Indeed Allah is ever, over all things, a Witness.
Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.
And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Acquainted [with all things].
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.
Who are stingy and enjoin upon [other] people stinginess and conceal what Allah has given them of His bounty - and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment -
