📖 English Meaning
They are the ones who disbelieved and obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram while the offering was prevented from reaching its place of sacrifice. And if not for believing men and believing women whom you did not know - that you might trample them and there would befall you because of them dishonor without [your] knowledge - [you would have been permitted to enter Makkah]. [This was so] that Allah might admit to His mercy whom He willed. If they had been apart [from them], We would have punished those who disbelieved among them with painful punishment

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses a profound moment in Islamic history — the events surrounding the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, when the believers were prevented from performing 'Umrah by the polytheists of Makkah. Allah describes the reality of those who opposed the Prophet ﷺ and his companions: they were the ones who rejected faith, barred the believers from reaching the Sacred Mosque, and held back the sacrificial animals so they could not reach their proper place of sacrifice in the Haram.

Yet, in the midst of this apparent setback, Allah reveals a hidden wisdom that the believers could not perceive at the time. Among the people of Makkah, there were believing men and believing women — weak and oppressed — who concealed their faith out of fear for their lives. The Muslims did not know who they were, for they were mixed among the disbelievers. Had the believers been given permission to fight and enter Makkah by force, they might have unknowingly killed these innocent believers. That would have brought upon them sin, blame, and the obligation of blood money — all without their knowledge.

So Allah, in His infinite mercy and perfect wisdom, prevented the fighting at that time. His purpose was to admit into His mercy — the mercy of Islam and true faith — whomever He willed. Indeed, many of those very polytheists later embraced Islam, including some of its most prominent figures, and became among the strongest supporters of the faith. What appeared to be a loss was, in truth, a door to immense good.

Allah then states that had the believers been clearly separated from the disbelievers, He would have inflicted upon the disbelievers a painful punishment — through the hands of the believers, who would have entered Makkah and subdued them by capture and killing. But because of the presence of the hidden believers, the punishment was delayed, and the door of mercy remained open.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson in trust and patience. Sometimes what we perceive as a setback or a failure is, in fact, Allah's hidden mercy protecting us from harm we cannot foresee. The believers at Hudaybiyyah were deeply saddened when they were prevented from entering the Sacred Mosque — yet Allah turned that very moment into a great victory, as the Qur'an itself calls it: *"Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory"* (48:1).

This is a call for every Muslim to trust Allah's plan even when the path seems unclear. Allah knows what we do not know. He protects us from consequences we cannot imagine, and He opens doors of goodness in ways we never expect. So hold firm to patience, place your trust in Allah, and know that His wisdom surpasses all understanding — and His mercy encompasses all things.

📜 Verse 23-27 — Al-Fath

[This is] the established way of Allah which has occurred before. And never will you find in the way of Allah any change.
And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them within [the area of] Makkah after He caused you to overcome them. And ever is Allah of what you do, Seeing.
When those who disbelieved had put into their hearts chauvinism - the chauvinism of the time of ignorance. But Allah sent down His tranquillity upon His Messenger and upon the believers and imposed upon them the word of righteousness, and they were more deserving of it and worthy of it. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing.
Certainly has Allah showed to His Messenger the vision in truth. You will surely enter al-Masjid al-Haram, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened, not fearing [anyone]. He knew what you did not know and has arranged before that a conquest near [at hand].
