Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals a profound manifestation of Allah’s power and mercy during the events at Hudaybiyyah. It was Allah alone who restrained the hands of the polytheists from harming you, and likewise restrained your hands from harming them, in the very heart of Makkah—after He had granted you dominance over them. Around eighty armed men from the Quraysh had descended upon the Muslim camp with the intent to attack and cause harm. Allah enabled the Muslims to capture them, placing them entirely under their control. Yet, instead of retaliating or shedding blood, the Muslims—by Allah’s grace—released them unharmed, without killing or injuring a single one. This was not a sign of weakness, but a divine test and a demonstration of the Muslims’ forbearance and commitment to peace, even when victory was within their grasp.
This event was a turning point, for it paved the way for the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, which ultimately became a great victory for Islam. Allah’s wisdom in preventing bloodshed in the sacred precincts of Makkah was profound: it preserved the sanctity of the Holy City, softened hearts toward the message of Islam, and opened doors for thousands to embrace the faith thereafter. Allah, the All-Seeing, is fully aware of every action, intention, and hidden motive. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will reward each soul according to its deeds.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in teaching us the value of restraint and trust in Allah! When you are in a position of power over your enemy, Islam does not call you to vengeance or cruelty—it calls you to wisdom, mercy, and higher purpose. The Muslims could have easily killed those eighty men, but they chose the path of forgiveness, and Allah turned that very act of mercy into a monumental victory for the entire Ummah. This is the character of a true believer: strength is not in striking first, but in controlling one's anger and acting with foresight. Allah sees your struggles, your patience, and your sincerity. So trust Him, for He turns even the most difficult situations into blessings for those who submit to His will. Let this verse inspire you to be a person of peace, wisdom, and unwavering faith—knowing that Allah’s vision encompasses all, and His reward is far greater than any fleeting revenge.
