Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah reminds us of a pivotal moment during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, when the disbelievers of Quraysh filled their hearts with arrogant pride—the blind fanaticism of the pre-Islamic era. Their pride prevented them from acknowledging the truth of Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) message. They refused to write "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" at the top of the treaty, and they objected to the phrase "This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon," insisting instead on merely writing his name and his father’s name, as they refused to recognize his prophethood.
Their arrogance was not rooted in justice or truth, but in sheer stubbornness and tribal ego—the very essence of the ignorance that Islam came to eradicate. They feared that accepting these words would be an admission of defeat or a loss of face before their people.
Yet, in the face of this hostility, Allah bestowed His divine tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers. He calmed their hearts, so that despite the provocation and the injustice they faced, they did not respond with the same arrogance or aggression. Instead, they remained patient, composed, and obedient to Allah’s command.
Allah then made the believers adhere firmly to the word of piety—"La ilaha illa Allah"—and to live by its demands. This word is the foundation of all righteousness and the essence of true devotion. The believers were truly more deserving of this word than the disbelievers, for they embraced it with sincere hearts, acted upon it, and made it the guiding principle of their lives. They were its rightful people, while the disbelievers had rejected it and were unworthy of it.
And Allah, in His infinite wisdom, knows all things. He knows who is truly deserving of His guidance and who is not. Nothing is hidden from Him—neither the sincerity of the believers’ hearts nor the stubbornness of the disbelievers’ pride.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It teaches us that true honor and dignity are not found in arrogance, stubbornness, or blind partisanship—but in humility, submission to Allah, and adherence to the word of truth. The disbelievers of Quraysh thought they were protecting their honor by refusing to acknowledge the truth, but in reality, they only deprived themselves of Allah’s tranquility and guidance.
The believers, on the other hand, were granted the greatest gift: inner peace and steadfastness, because they chose Allah’s pleasure over their own ego. They understood that true victory lies not in winning arguments or saving face, but in remaining firm upon faith and righteousness.
Dear reader, whenever you face a situation where pride tempts you to reject the truth or to act unjustly, remember this verse. Choose the path of humility and submission to Allah. Let your heart be filled with the tranquility that comes from trusting Him, and let your tongue and actions be guided by the word of piety—"La ilaha illa Allah." For those who uphold this word with sincerity are the true people of honor, both in this life and in the Hereafter.
Allah knows what is in your heart. He sees your struggles, your sincerity, and your efforts to remain upon the truth. So hold firm to His guidance, and He will grant you peace, success, and a place among His righteous servants.
