Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah exposes the ugly reality of the Children of Israel who, when struck by drought and hardship, dared to utter a monstrous statement against their Lord. They said, "Allah's hand is chained," accusing Him of stinginess and withholding His bounty from them. This was a reflection of their own corrupt hearts, for they measured the Creator by their own flawed and miserly nature.
Allah responded to their slander with a fitting recompense: "Their hands are chained," meaning they were restrained from every form of goodness, and they were cast out of His mercy for the very words they spoke. Their punishment was a direct consequence of their insolence.
Then comes the glorious correction: "Nay, both His hands are outstretched; He spends as He wills." This is a declaration of Allah's absolute generosity and perfect power. He is the Most Giving, the Most Bountiful, whose treasures never diminish no matter how much He gives. He provides for whom He wills and withholds from whom He wills, according to His infinite wisdom — not out of miserliness, but as a test and a mercy. The verse affirms the attribute of two hands for Allah, in a manner befitting His majesty, without any resemblance to creation and without asking "how."
Yet, despite this clear truth, the verse reveals that the revelation sent to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) only increased many of them in transgression and disbelief. Their envy and hatred blinded them, so every new verse became a reason for them to sink deeper into arrogance and rejection.
Allah then declares that He has cast enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Judgment. Their factions are divided, their hearts are torn apart, and they can never unite in a lasting way. Whenever they attempt to kindle the fire of war against the believers — plotting, conspiring, and scheming — Allah extinguishes their fire and frustrates their plans. Their efforts only bring corruption and mischief to the earth, and Allah makes clear that He does not love those who spread corruption.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries timeless lessons for every believer. First, it teaches us the purity of Allah's attributes — He is the Generous Giver, and we must never harbor ill thoughts about His decrees. When we face hardship, it is not because Allah is stingy, but because He is testing us, refining us, and preparing us for something greater.
Second, it warns us against the disease of envy and arrogance that destroyed the Children of Israel. When we see others blessed with knowledge, wealth, or status, we must not let jealousy consume our hearts. Instead, we should ask Allah for His bounty and strive to be grateful for what we have.
Third, the verse reassures the believers that no matter how powerful the plots of the enemies of Islam may seem, Allah is their ultimate protector. Every fire they kindle will be extinguished, every scheme will fail, and their corruption will only bring about their own ruin.
So, dear reader, hold fast to the rope of Allah, trust in His generosity, and know that His hands are always outstretched with mercy, provision, and guidance. Turn to Him in humility, and He will never let you down. For indeed, Allah loves those who do good and despises those who spread corruption. Let this verse be a source of strength for you, a reminder that the final victory belongs to the righteous.
