Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Kitāb (كِتَابٍ): A written record or book.
  • Maknūn (مَّكْنُونٍ): Well-guarded, concealed, or protected from sight and touch.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse refers to the Qur’an, which has been described in the preceding verses as "noble" and "honored." Here, Allah clarifies that this magnificent revelation is inscribed in a well-guarded Book — the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ) — which is hidden from the eyes of all creation. This divine protection ensures that the Qur’an remains untouched by any corruption, alteration, or distortion, preserving its purity and authenticity from eternity until the end of time.

This guarded Book is in the hands of the honored angels, who are pure and sinless. No one can truly access its essence or comprehend its depths except those who are purified — the angels, and among humans, those who cleanse themselves of disbelief, impurity, and spiritual filth. This verse also implies the importance of physical and spiritual purity when engaging with the Qur’an, as it is a sacred text deserving of utmost respect and reverence.

Reflection and Da‘wah:

This verse invites every believer to reflect on the extraordinary care Allah has taken in preserving His final message. The Qur’an is not an ordinary book; it is a divine treasure, protected from every form of tampering. This is a sign of Allah’s immense love and mercy for humanity — He has ensured that His guidance remains accessible and unaltered for all generations until the Day of Judgment.

As a Muslim, this should fill your heart with gratitude and awe. You hold in your hands a book that is directly connected to the Preserved Tablet, a book that the angels honor and that carries the words of your Creator. Let this inspire you to approach the Qur’an with humility, purity of intention, and a sincere desire to implement its teachings in your life. When you recite it, remember that you are engaging with a divine revelation that has been safeguarded by Allah Himself — a privilege that no other nation has been granted to this degree.

If you have not yet developed a deep relationship with the Qur’an, let this verse be your starting point. Begin by reading it with reflection, seeking to understand its meanings, and striving to act upon its guidance. The Qur’an is a light that illuminates the path to success in this life and the next. Embrace it, and you will find peace, purpose, and a connection to your Lord that transcends all worldly concerns.
