Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • لَا يَمَسُّهُ (Lā yamassuhu): None can touch it — referring to the preserved Book (the Qur'an) in its heavenly reality.
  • إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ (Illā al-muṭahharūn): Except those who are purified — i.e., the angels who are free from sin and impurity, and likewise those believers who are in a state of ritual purity.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse speaks of the Qur'an's exalted status and its sacred nature. It tells us that this glorious Qur'an — the source of immense benefit, abundant goodness, and profound knowledge — is preserved in a guarded, hidden Book (the Preserved Tablet, al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ) that no one can reach or touch except those who are utterly pure: the noble angels whom Allah has cleansed of all faults, sins, and imperfections. These angels are described as "purified" because they are free from every blemish and are the trusted carriers of divine revelation.

The verse also carries a profound lesson for humanity: just as the angels who handle the heavenly Book are pure, so too are believers encouraged to approach the Qur'an with purity — both physical purity (such as being free from major and minor impurities) and spiritual purity (being free from shirk, hypocrisy, and sin). The Qur'an is not an ordinary book; it is the speech of Allah, and approaching it with respect and cleanliness is a sign of reverence for its divine origin.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse beautifully highlights the honor and sanctity of the Qur'an — a book so noble that even the angels who guard it are described as purified. As Muslims, this should fill our hearts with awe and love for the Qur'an. Imagine: the very words you recite in your prayers, the verses you read in your daily life, are part of a heavenly reality that only the purest of creation can touch in its original form. This invites us to purify ourselves — our hearts, our intentions, and our actions — so that we may truly connect with this divine treasure. When you open the Qur'an, remember that you are engaging with the words of your Creator, and let that awareness transform your recitation into a moment of sincere worship, drawing you closer to Allah and inspiring you to live by its guidance. The Qur'an is a gift of mercy and light; embrace it with a pure heart, and it will illuminate your path in this life and the next.
