📖 English Meaning
And know that anything you obtain of war booty - then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion - the day when the two armies met. And Allah, over all things, is competent.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ghanimtum (غَنِمْتُم): Whatever you acquire as spoils of war from the enemy through legitimate combat in the path of Allah.
  • Khumsuhu (خُمُسَهُ): One-fifth (20%) of the total spoils.
  • Dhil-Qurba (ذِي الْقُرْبَى): The near relatives of the Prophet ﷺ, specifically the Banu Hashim and Banu Al-Muttalib.
  • Yatama (الْيَتَامَى): Orphans — young, poor Muslim children whose fathers have died before they reached maturity.
  • Masakin (الْمَسَاكِينِ): The needy and poor Muslims who are in a state of want.
  • Ibn al-Sabil (ابْنِ السَّبِيلِ): The wayfarer — a traveler who has run out of resources while on a journey.
  • Yawm al-Furqan (يَوْمَ الْفُرْقَانِ): The Day of Criterion — the Day of Badr, when Allah distinguished truth from falsehood.
  • Iltaqa al-Jam'an (الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ): When the two hosts met — the believers and the disbelievers.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, know with certainty and act upon this divine ruling: whatever spoils you gain from the enemy through legitimate warfare in Allah's cause, then indeed one-fifth of it belongs to Allah and His Messenger, and the remaining four-fifths are for the fighters who participated in the battle. But this is not merely a matter of distribution — it is a test of your faith and obedience.

The one-fifth is then divided into five portions: a portion for Allah and His Messenger, which is spent on the general welfare and interests of the Muslim community; a portion for the near relatives of the Prophet ﷺ (the Banu Hashim and Banu Al-Muttalib), given to them in place of charity, as charity is not permissible for them due to their noble lineage; a portion for orphans — those vulnerable children who have lost their fathers; a portion for the poor and needy; and a portion for the stranded traveler who is far from home and resources.

This command is conditional upon your sincere faith in Allah and your belief in what He sent down upon His servant Muhammad ﷺ on the Day of Criterion — the Day of Badr, when Allah separated truth from falsehood and granted victory to the small band of believers over the mighty army of disbelievers. That day was a manifest sign of Allah's power and His support for His righteous servants.

And Allah is Able to do all things — nothing is beyond His capability. He who granted victory to the outnumbered believers at Badr is fully capable of granting you victory in all your affairs, so long as you remain obedient to His commands and steadfast upon His path.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear believer, ponder deeply upon this verse — it teaches us that wealth is not ours to hoard, but a trust from Allah to be distributed with justice and compassion. The Islamic system of distributing war spoils reflects the beautiful balance of Islam: it honors the fighters who sacrifice, cares for the orphans who are vulnerable, supports the poor who are in need, and provides for the traveler who is stranded. This is the mercy of Islam — a religion that does not forget any segment of society.

And remember the Day of Badr — when 313 believers, poorly equipped, faced over 1,000 well-armed disbelievers. Yet Allah granted them victory because of their faith and obedience. This is the same Allah who is with you today. If you truly believe in Him and follow His Messenger ﷺ, He will never abandon you. He is Al-Qadir — the All-Powerful — and His help is near for those who are sincere.

So embrace this divine guidance with an open heart, and let it transform you into a believer who is just, compassionate, and ever mindful that all blessings come from Allah alone.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Al-Anfal

And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do.
But if they turn away - then know that Allah is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and Excellent is the helper.
[Remember] when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the farther side, and the caravan was lower [in position] than you. If you had made an appointment [to meet], you would have missed the appointment. But [it was] so that Allah might accomplish a matter already destined - that those who perished [through disbelief] would perish upon evidence and those who lived [in faith] would live upon evidence; and indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
[Remember, O Muhammad], when Allah showed them to you in your dream as few; and if He had shown them to you as many, you [believers] would have lost courage and would have disputed in the matter [of whether to fight], but Allah saved [you from that]. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.
