وَإِن تَوَلَّوْا فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَوْلَاكُمْ ۚ نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ ۝٤٠

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

Tawallaw (تَوَلَّوْا): They turn away, withdraw, or persist in opposition after being called to the truth.
Mawlākum (مَوْلَاكُمْ): Your Protector, Guardian, and Helper—the One who takes charge of your affairs.
Ni‘ma al-Mawlā (نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَى): Excellent is the Protector—praise of His role as guardian.
Ni‘ma al-Naṣīr (وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ): Excellent is the Helper—praise of His role as supporter and defender.

Explanation of the Verse:

O believers, if these polytheists turn away from what you have called them to—faith in Allah and His Messenger—and refuse to cease their hostility, persisting instead in disbelief and fighting against you, then know with certainty that Allah is your Protector and Guardian. He is the One who defends you, preserves you, and grants you victory over your enemies.

How excellent is this Protector! He never abandons those who seek His protection, and He never lets down those who place their trust in Him. And how excellent is this Helper! Whoever Allah supports can never be defeated, no matter how great the forces arrayed against them.

So do not fear their numbers or their power. Do not let their rejection discourage you. For the outcome belongs to Allah alone—He is sufficient for you, and His aid is guaranteed for those who remain steadfast in His cause. When you rely on Him, you rely on the Strongest Foundation that can never be shaken.

A Call to Faith and Reflection:

This verse carries a powerful message of reassurance for every believer facing opposition. When people turn away from the truth, it is not a sign of weakness in the message—it is a test of your trust in Allah. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who controls all affairs, has promised to be your Protector. What more could you need?

Reflect on this: Allah does not simply say He is with you—He says He is your *Mawlā*, your Guardian who manages your affairs and fights on your behalf. And He is your *Naṣīr*, your Helper who strengthens you and grants you victory. With such a Protector and Helper, how can you ever feel alone or afraid?

This is the beauty of Islam: it teaches you to place your complete reliance on Allah, the Almighty, who never fails those who turn to Him. So stand firm, trust in Him, and know that His promise is true. He is the best Protector, and He is the best Helper—so let your heart find peace in that certainty.

📜 Verse 38-42 — Al-Anfal

38قُل لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِن يَنتَهُوا يُغْفَرْ لَهُم مَّا قَدْ سَلَفَ وَإِن يَعُودُوا فَقَدْ مَضَتْ سُنَّتُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] - then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place.

39وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ كُلُّهُ لِلَّهِ ۚ فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ

And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do.

40وَإِن تَوَلَّوْا فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَوْلَاكُمْ ۚ نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ

But if they turn away - then know that Allah is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and Excellent is the helper.

41۞ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا غَنِمْتُم مِّن شَيْءٍ فَأَنَّ لِلَّهِ خُمُسَهُ وَلِلرَّسُولِ وَلِذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَالْيَتَامَىٰ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ إِن كُنتُمْ آمَنتُم بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا يَوْمَ الْفُرْقَانِ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

And know that anything you obtain of war booty - then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion - the day when the two armies met. And Allah, over all things, is competent.

42إِذْ أَنتُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الْقُصْوَىٰ وَالرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَلَوْ تَوَاعَدتُّمْ لَاخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِي الْمِيعَادِ ۙ وَلَٰكِن لِّيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَيَّ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ ۗ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَسَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

[Remember] when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the farther side, and the caravan was lower [in position] than you. If you had made an appointment [to meet], you would have missed the appointment. But [it was] so that Allah might accomplish a matter already destined - that those who perished [through disbelief] would perish upon evidence and those who lived [in faith] would live upon evidence; and indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
