The Interpretation:
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, presents a vivid and profound parable to distinguish truth from falsehood, guidance from misguidance. He says: He sends down rain from the sky, and the valleys flow according to their capacity—some large, some small—each receiving its share. As the torrent of water rushes forth, it carries on its surface a rising foam, a scum that floats and swells, having no benefit or substance. This is the first image: the pure, life-giving water that nourishes the earth, contrasted with the worthless froth that rides upon it and is soon cast away.
Then Allah strikes a second parable, drawn from the craft of human hands. He mentions the ores that people smelt in fire—gold and silver, seeking to fashion ornaments of beauty, or copper and iron, seeking to make tools and vessels of utility. When these metals are heated and melted, there rises from them a foam, a dross, similar to the foam of the flood. This impurity is skimmed off and discarded, while the pure, precious metal remains, firm and beneficial, to be shaped and used by people.
In this way, Allah presents the example of truth and falsehood. Falsehood is like the foam and scum: it may rise high for a time, appearing prominent and loud, but it is hollow, fleeting, and ultimately vanishes—carried away by the current or cast aside by the fire, leaving nothing of value. Truth, on the other hand, is like the clear water that quenches thirst and brings forth vegetation, and like the refined metal that endures, bringing benefit to humanity for generations. It settles firmly in the earth, remains steadfast, and yields lasting fruit.
This is how Allah strikes parables for people—so that they may open their hearts and minds, discern the enduring from the transient, and cling to what truly benefits them in this life and the next. The parable is an invitation: do not be deceived by the temporary elevation of falsehood, for it will surely pass away like the foam on a wave. Instead, hold fast to the truth, for it is like the pure water and the solid metal—it remains, it benefits, and it brings peace and success. Let this imagery inspire you to seek the everlasting over the fleeting, and to anchor your life in what pleases Allah, for He is the One who clarifies the path and guides those who sincerely seek Him.
