Explanation of the Verse:
Dhul-Qarnayn, a righteous and powerful ruler whom Allah had granted vast dominion and means to travel the earth, continued his journey westward until he reached the farthest point where the sun appears to set. There, he saw the sun as if it were dipping into a dark, muddy spring — a natural phenomenon that appears to the eye, not a literal reality, for the sun is far greater than any earthly body of water. This description reflects what he saw with his own sight, and it is a reminder that human perception is limited to what is visible.
At that place, he found a people who were disbelievers, living without guidance or knowledge of the true God. Allah, the Most Wise, addressed Dhul-Qarnayn — not through revelation as a prophet, but through divine inspiration and guidance — and gave him a clear choice: either to punish these people for their disbelief and wrongdoing, or to treat them with kindness and call them to the path of righteousness.
This verse beautifully illustrates the balance between justice and mercy in Islam. Allah granted Dhul-Qarnayn both the authority to enforce justice and the freedom to choose compassion. It teaches us that leadership, power, and influence are trusts from Allah, and that every person in a position of authority must decide how to use that power — whether to be harsh or to be merciful, whether to destroy or to guide.
The choice given to Dhul-Qarnayn is a profound lesson for all of us: even when we have the upper hand over others, we are encouraged to prefer kindness and guidance over punishment, and to use our strength to bring people closer to the truth rather than to push them away. Islam is a religion of balance — it establishes justice, but it also opens the door to mercy, forgiveness, and the chance for people to change.
This story also reassures the believer that Allah is always with those who strive for His cause, guiding them in their decisions and granting them wisdom. When we act with sincerity and seek Allah's pleasure, He inspires us with the right choices, just as He inspired Dhul-Qarnayn. Let this be a reminder that true success lies not in domination, but in using whatever power or ability we have to serve Allah and benefit His creation.
