📖 English Meaning
Divorce is twice. Then, either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allah. But if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. These are the limits of Allah, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah - it is those who are the wrongdoers.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • At-Talaq (الطَّلَاقُ): Divorce; specifically here, it refers to the number of divorces after which the husband retains the right to take his wife back.
  • Marratan (مَرَّتَانِ): Two times; meaning two separate instances of divorce.
  • Imsakun bi-ma'ruf (إِمْسَاكٌ بِمَعْرُوفٍ): To retain the wife in marriage with kindness, fairness, and the fulfillment of her rights.
  • Tasrihun bi-ihsan (تَسْرِيحٌ بِإِحْسَانٍ): To release her gracefully, meaning to let her go with dignity, without harm or injustice.
  • Afdat (افْتَدَتْ): She ransomed herself; refers to the wife giving something (like the dowry) to the husband in exchange for her freedom (khul').
  • Hudud Allah (حُدُودُ اللَّهِ): The boundaries and laws set by Allah, which define what is lawful and unlawful.
  • La junah (لَا جُنَاحَ): No sin or blame; no legal or moral responsibility.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse establishes the divine framework for divorce in Islam, balancing justice, mercy, and the protection of both spouses' dignity. Allah clarifies that the divorce in which a husband may take his wife back (revocable divorce) is limited to two times. After each of these two divorces, the husband has a clear choice: either to retain his wife with kindness—meaning he reconciles with her, treats her well, and fulfills her rights—or to release her with excellence, which means he lets her go peacefully, without harm, and gives her what is due to her.

Then Allah addresses the matter of financial rights. It is not lawful for a husband to take back anything he has given his wife, whether it be the dowry (mahr) or any other gifts, unless both spouses fear that they will not be able to uphold the limits of Allah—meaning they cannot maintain the marital rights and obligations due to severe incompatibility or aversion. In such a case, the couple may refer their matter to their families or arbiters. If those arbiters genuinely fear that the couple cannot maintain Allah's boundaries, then there is no sin upon the wife if she gives something (such as returning the dowry) to the husband in exchange for her release—this is known as *khul'* (divorce initiated by the wife).

Finally, Allah declares that these rulings are His boundaries—the limits He has set to distinguish lawful from unlawful. Therefore, believers must not transgress them. Whoever oversteps these boundaries is among the wrongdoers, for they harm themselves by exposing their souls to Allah's displeasure and punishment.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a profound testament to the wisdom and mercy of Islamic law. It teaches us that even in the most difficult of human situations—the breakdown of a marriage—Islam provides a path of dignity, fairness, and spiritual awareness. The emphasis on *ma'ruf* (kindness) and *ihsan* (excellence) reminds us that a believer's character must shine even in moments of conflict. Divorce is not a license for cruelty or revenge; it is a regulated procedure designed to protect hearts and honor. The verse also highlights the sanctity of a woman's financial rights—she is not to be exploited or stripped of what is rightfully hers. And when reconciliation is impossible, the door of *khul'* is opened with mercy, allowing both parties to move forward without sin. This is the beauty of Islam: it does not leave human beings without guidance, but gives them clear, just, and compassionate rules that lead to peace in this life and success in the Hereafter. Let us reflect on these boundaries and strive to live within them, for they are not restrictions—they are protections from Allah, the Most Merciful, who knows what is best for His creation.

📜 Verse 227-231 — Al-Baqarah

And if they decide on divorce - then indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
Divorced women remain in waiting for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation. And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until [after] she marries a husband other than him. And if the latter husband divorces her [or dies], there is no blame upon the woman and her former husband for returning to each other if they think that they can keep [within] the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah, which He makes clear to a people who know.
And when you divorce women and they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or release them according to acceptable terms, and do not keep them, intending harm, to transgress [against them]. And whoever does that has certainly wronged himself. And do not take the verses of Allah in jest. And remember the favor of Allah upon you and what has been revealed to you of the Book and wisdom by which He instructs you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is Knowing of all things.
