📖 English Meaning
And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until [after] she marries a husband other than him. And if the latter husband divorces her [or dies], there is no blame upon the woman and her former husband for returning to each other if they think that they can keep [within] the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah, which He makes clear to a people who know.

Word Meanings:

  • Talaqaha (طَلَّقَهَا): Divorced her — specifically referring to the third and final divorce.
  • Tanikaha (تَنكِحَ): Marries him — meaning a genuine, valid marriage contract consummated by actual marital relations.
  • Zawjan ghayrahu (زَوْجًا غَيْرَهُ): Another husband — a different man, not the first husband.
  • Yataraja'a (يَتَرَاجَعَا): Return to each other — meaning remarriage between the original spouses.
  • Yaqima hudood Allah (يُقِيمَا حُدُودَ اللَّهِ): Uphold Allah's boundaries — i.e., fulfill the rights and obligations of marriage as prescribed by Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse completes the divine legislation on divorce, establishing a clear and firm boundary that protects the sanctity of marriage from being treated lightly or as a game. When a husband divorces his wife for the third time, she becomes permanently forbidden to him — she is no longer lawful for him to remarry, no matter how much they may wish to reunite. This finality serves as a powerful deterrent against reckless and repeated divorces, teaching spouses to value their bond and not abuse the institution of marriage.

However, Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, has provided a single, clear path for reconciliation: the woman must marry another man in a genuine, sincere marriage — not a sham arrangement or a tactical "halala" marriage intended merely to make her lawful for her first husband. This marriage must be real, with true intention, and must be consummated. If this second husband then divorces her or passes away, and she completes her waiting period (iddah), then — and only then — is it permissible for her and her first husband to reunite through a new marriage contract with a new dowry.

This permission is not unconditional. It is granted only if both spouses genuinely believe, in their hearts and minds, that they can uphold Allah's boundaries — that they can treat each other with justice, kindness, and respect, fulfilling the rights of marriage and avoiding its prohibitions. This condition reflects the profound Islamic principle that marriage is not merely a physical or social arrangement, but a sacred covenant built on taqwa (God-consciousness) and mutual accountability before Allah.

The verse concludes with a powerful statement: "These are the limits of Allah, which He makes clear to a people who know." This is a gentle yet firm reminder that these rulings are not arbitrary — they are divine boundaries set by the Creator Himself, who knows human nature perfectly. He clarifies them for those who possess knowledge and understanding, because it is they who will truly benefit from them. Those who reflect, learn, and apply these rulings with sincerity will find peace and stability in their family lives, while those who ignore them only harm themselves.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate the beauty and wisdom of this legislation. Allah does not leave human beings to wander in confusion regarding matters as crucial as marriage and family. He sets clear, just, and merciful boundaries that protect dignity, honor, and emotional well-being. This verse teaches us that marriage is a serious commitment — not a toy to be played with, nor a bond to be broken carelessly. The requirement of a genuine second marriage before reuniting serves as a profound lesson: if a couple cannot maintain their union through the first two chances, they must face the consequences, which encourages them to strive harder in their marriage the first time around.

Moreover, this verse highlights Allah's mercy — He does not close the door of reconciliation entirely, but opens it through a legitimate, dignified path. This reflects the balanced nature of Islam: strict where strictness is needed, and lenient where mercy is appropriate. Let this verse inspire you to honor your marital commitments, to treat your spouse with love and respect, and to always remember that Allah's boundaries are there for your own good — in this life and the Hereafter. May Allah grant us all the understanding to live by His limits and the strength to uphold them.

📜 Verse 228-232 — Al-Baqarah

Divorced women remain in waiting for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation. And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
Divorce is twice. Then, either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allah. But if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. These are the limits of Allah, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah - it is those who are the wrongdoers.
And when you divorce women and they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or release them according to acceptable terms, and do not keep them, intending harm, to transgress [against them]. And whoever does that has certainly wronged himself. And do not take the verses of Allah in jest. And remember the favor of Allah upon you and what has been revealed to you of the Book and wisdom by which He instructs you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is Knowing of all things.
And when you divorce women and they have fulfilled their term, do not prevent them from remarrying their [former] husbands if they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis. That is instructed to whoever of you believes in Allah and the Last Day. That is better for you and purer, and Allah knows and you know not.
