📖 English Meaning
Divorced women remain in waiting for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation. And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Muṭallaqāt (المطلقات): Divorced women.
  • Yatarabbaṣna (يتربصن): They must wait and observe a waiting period.
  • Qurū’ (قروء): The plural of *qar’*, which refers to menstrual periods or the purity between them (the waiting period of three menstrual cycles).
  • Buʿūlatuhunna (بعولتهن): Their husbands.
  • Aḥaqqu bi-raddihinna (أحق بردهن): More entitled to take them back (in marriage during the waiting period).
  • Bi-l-maʿrūf (بالمعروف): In a good and recognized manner, according to what is customary and acceptable in Islam.
  • Darajah (درجة): A degree or rank of responsibility and authority.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse establishes the sacred rulings concerning divorced women, protecting their dignity, their rights, and the sanctity of family life. Allah, the Most Wise, commands that divorced women who have reached the age of menstruation must observe a waiting period (*ʿiddah*) of three menstrual cycles before they may marry another man. This waiting period serves a profound purpose: it ensures the purity of the womb from pregnancy, so that lineages remain clear and untainted, and it also gives time for reflection and the possibility of reconciliation.

In this context, it is absolutely forbidden for a divorced woman to conceal what Allah has created in her womb—whether it be a pregnancy or the fact that she is menstruating—if she truly believes in Allah and the Last Day. Concealing such matters would be an act of deception that could lead to grave injustices, such as the wrongful denial of a husband's right to take her back, or the confusion of lineage. True faith demands honesty and trust in Allah’s wisdom, even when it may seem difficult.

During this waiting period, the husband has the greater right to take his wife back, provided that his intention is sincere reconciliation and the restoration of harmony, not to harm her or prolong her suffering out of spite. This ruling reflects the mercy of Islam, which seeks to preserve the family bond whenever there is genuine hope for reform.

Furthermore, the verse beautifully establishes the principle of mutual rights and responsibilities between spouses: women have rights over their husbands just as husbands have rights over them, all in a fair and recognized manner. However, men hold a degree of responsibility and authority over women, not as a privilege to dominate, but as a duty to lead, protect, and provide for the household with kindness and justice. This degree is coupled with the obligation to treat their wives with excellence and compassion.

The verse concludes by reminding us that Allah is Al-ʿAzīz (the Almighty, Whose might prevails over all) and Al-Ḥakīm (the All-Wise, Who places everything in its proper station). His laws are not arbitrary; they are perfectly designed for the well-being of humanity, both in this life and the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, look at the beauty of this divine legislation! Islam does not leave the affairs of marriage and divorce to chaos or personal whims. Instead, it wraps them in mercy, justice, and wisdom. The waiting period is not a punishment—it is a shield for the woman’s honor, a protection for the child’s lineage, and a window of opportunity for hearts to heal and reunite.

And when the verse speaks of the husband’s right to take his wife back, it immediately conditions it with the intention of *iṣlāḥ* (reform and goodness)—so that power is never used as a weapon, but only as a means to build and repair.

O Muslim brother and sister, let these rulings remind you of the profound care Allah has for His creation. He knows what is in your hearts and what is best for your lives. Trust His wisdom, submit to His commands, and you will find peace in this world and success in the next. For indeed, the One who legislated these laws is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise, and His mercy encompasses everything.

📜 Verse 226-230 — Al-Baqarah

For those who swear not to have sexual relations with their wives is a waiting time of four months, but if they return [to normal relations] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And if they decide on divorce - then indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
Divorce is twice. Then, either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allah. But if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. These are the limits of Allah, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah - it is those who are the wrongdoers.
And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until [after] she marries a husband other than him. And if the latter husband divorces her [or dies], there is no blame upon the woman and her former husband for returning to each other if they think that they can keep [within] the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah, which He makes clear to a people who know.
