Tafsir (Explanation):
Have you not heard, O noble Prophet, the remarkable and sobering story of the leaders of the Children of Israel who came after the time of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him? These were the elite and the influential figures among their people. When they found themselves humiliated, displaced, and stripped of their honor and homeland, they approached their Prophet and pleaded: "Appoint for us a king so that we may unite under his leadership and fight in the cause of Allah, to reclaim our dignity and liberate our land."
Their Prophet, being wise and perceptive, did not rush to grant their request. Instead, he posed a searching question to test their sincerity and resolve: "Do you not realize that if fighting is prescribed for you, you might refuse to fight?" He knew the weakness of human nature and the tendency to shrink from hardship when it becomes a reality rather than a distant aspiration.
The leaders responded with apparent confidence and indignation: "How could we possibly refuse to fight in the cause of Allah when we have been driven out of our homes and separated from our children?" Their words suggested that they had every reason to fight — they had suffered injustice, lost their lands, and seen their families torn apart by the enemy. They spoke as though their motivation was unshakeable.
Yet, when Allah actually prescribed fighting for them and a king was appointed, the truth of their hearts was revealed. The vast majority of them turned away and fled from the battlefield, failing to honor the very commitment they had so boldly declared. Only a small, steadfast group remained firm and fulfilled their promise. And Allah, in His perfect knowledge, is fully aware of the wrongdoers — those who break their covenants, who speak with their tongues what is not in their hearts, and who turn away from His commands when the time for action arrives.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: it is easy to speak boldly about sacrifice and struggle when it is merely an idea, but true faith is proven when the moment of action arrives. Allah tests the sincerity of His servants, and He knows what lies within their hearts. Let us not be like those who promise much and deliver little. Instead, let our words be matched by our deeds, and let us be among the steadfast few who honor their covenant with Allah, for Allah loves those who are true to their promises and rewards them with victory and honor in this life and the Hereafter.
