Explanation of the Verse:
When the Children of Israel demanded that their Prophet appoint a king for them so they could fight under his banner in the path of God, their Prophet responded to them: "Indeed, God has raised for you Ṭālūt (Saul) as a king." This was a divine choice, not a human one — for God alone knows who is fit to lead His servants.
Yet the prominent leaders among the Children of Israel — those who held positions of wealth and status — objected with astonishment, saying: "How can he have kingship over us when we are more deserving of it than he is?" They argued that he was not from the tribe of kings (the tribe of Judah), nor from the tribe of prophecy (the tribe of Levi), and that he had not been given abundant wealth to support his rule. In their eyes, leadership was a matter of lineage and riches — not of divine wisdom.
Their Prophet answered them with a profound truth: "Indeed, God has chosen him over you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and physical strength." He was not chosen because of his lineage or wealth, but because God — who sees what is hidden in hearts and knows what is beneficial for His servants — selected him for this great responsibility. He was given two essential qualities for leadership: deep knowledge, particularly of warfare and governance, and physical strength and stature to endure the hardships of battle and command.
Then the Prophet concluded with a timeless principle: "And God grants His kingdom to whom He wills. And God is All-Encompassing in His bounty, All-Knowing." The kingdom belongs to God alone; He is not bound by human standards of nobility or wealth. He gives authority to whom He chooses, based on His perfect wisdom, and His giving is vast — He can elevate the lowly and humble the mighty, for nothing is beyond His reach, and nothing escapes His knowledge.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: true leadership and honor are not measured by wealth, lineage, or social status — but by what God values: knowledge, strength of character, and sincerity in serving His cause. How often do we judge people by their outward circumstances while God looks at their hearts and capabilities?
The Children of Israel had asked for a king to fight for God's cause, and when God answered their prayer with a choice they did not expect, they objected based on worldly criteria. Yet God's choice was the best for them — for He knows what they did not know.
Dear reader, when you place your trust in God and submit to His choices — whether in leadership, in life's trials, or in the path you take — remember that His wisdom surpasses all human reasoning. He is the All-Encompassing in His grace, the All-Knowing of what is best for you. So do not be quick to judge God's decrees with limited human vision. Instead, embrace His choices with trust and patience, and you will find that what He has chosen for you is far better than what you could have chosen for yourself.
And let this verse inspire you to value knowledge and strength — not for arrogance, but for service. Seek knowledge that benefits, strengthen your body and character, and strive to be among those whom God chooses for noble purposes. For God's kingdom is vast, and His giving is boundless — He raises whom He wills, and He knows exactly who deserves to be raised.
