Word Meanings:

  • Hā Mīm (حم): These are among the disjointed letters (al-ḥurūf al-muqaṭṭaʿah) that appear at the beginning of some Quranic chapters. Their precise meaning is known only to Allah, yet they serve as a miraculous challenge, demonstrating that the Quran—composed of the very letters of the Arabic language—remains inimitable by human beings.

Explanation of the Verse:

The verse begins with the two Arabic letters "Hā Mīm." These are part of the mysterious, disjointed letters that open several chapters of the Quran, and their full significance is known only to Allah Almighty. Scholars have noted that these letters appear at the start of certain surahs as a testament to the Quran’s divine origin: although the Arabs were masters of eloquence and rhetoric, they were utterly unable to produce anything resembling this scripture, even though it is built from the same letters they used daily in their speech and poetry. The letters thus serve as a profound challenge and a sign of the Quran’s miraculous nature, inviting reflection on the fact that no human, despite all effort, could compose words of such guidance, wisdom, and beauty. The repetition of these letters across various chapters also draws attention to the unity and coherence of the divine message, urging the listener to pause and contemplate the greatness of the Book that follows.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, when you encounter these mysterious letters at the start of a chapter, let them awaken your heart to the majesty of the Quran. They are not mere sounds, but a divine summons to ponder: how can a book, revealed over twenty-three years in fragments, remain so perfectly consistent, so profoundly moving, and so scientifically and historically accurate? This is no human composition—it is the speech of the Creator, sent as a mercy to guide humanity out of darkness into light. Let every letter of the Quran be a reminder of Allah’s infinite wisdom and His love for His servants, and let it inspire you to draw closer to Him through recitation, reflection, and action. Indeed, in these verses lies a treasure for those who seek truth, and a light for those who walk the path of righteousness.

We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away.
