The Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse establishes a foundational principle of Islamic society: all believers are brothers and sisters in faith, regardless of their ethnicity, nationality, or social status. This brotherhood is not merely a sentimental phrase—it is a binding spiritual reality that unites hearts through their shared submission to Allah. The verse uses the restrictive particle "innamā" to affirm that this brotherhood is the defining characteristic of true believers, and no other identity supersedes it.
When the Prophet ﷺ migrated to Madinah, he established this brotherhood between the Emigrants (Muhājirūn) and the Helpers (Anṣār), making them inherit from one another before blood relatives. This demonstrates that the bond of faith is even stronger than ties of kinship. Therefore, when two believers fall into conflict or dispute, it is the duty of the wider community to step in and reconcile between them, because leaving them divided contradicts the very essence of faith.
The command "fa-aṣliḥū bayna akhawaykum" (so make peace between your two brothers) addresses every believer, not just leaders or scholars. Each Muslim bears responsibility for maintaining harmony within the community. Reconciliation is an act of worship that Allah loves, and it requires patience, wisdom, and sincerity. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Shall I not inform you of a degree higher than fasting, prayer, and charity?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Reconciling between people, for corruption between people is the shaver (of faith)."
The verse concludes with a profound motivator: "Wa-ttaqū Allāh laʿallakum turḥamūn" (and fear Allah, so that you may receive mercy). Taqwā (God-consciousness) is the key to divine mercy. When believers strive to obey Allah in all matters—especially in mending broken relationships—they open the doors of Allah's mercy upon themselves. This mercy brings tranquility, forgiveness, and blessings in this life and the Hereafter.
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this verse: Allah did not say "the believers are brothers" only to inform us, but immediately followed it with a practical command to act upon this brotherhood. If you see two Muslims at odds, do not remain silent or spread the conflict further. Instead, be a peacemaker, speak kind words, and remind them of their bond in faith. And in all your affairs, maintain consciousness of Allah, for His mercy is near to those who strive to please Him. This is the path to a united, compassionate, and blessed community—one that truly reflects the beauty of Islam.
