Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His divine law! Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, addresses you with a profound ethical directive that safeguards the harmony of the Muslim community.
First, Allah prohibits men from mocking other men. You may look down upon someone, laugh at their appearance, their accent, their tribe, or their social status — but you have no idea of their worth in the sight of Allah. Perhaps the very person you are ridiculing holds a higher rank with Allah than you do. A person's outward appearance or worldly circumstances reveal nothing about their spiritual station. The one you mock might be a beloved servant of Allah, while you, in your arrogance and mockery, are distancing yourself from His mercy.
Second, Allah extends the same prohibition to women — no woman should mock another woman. The same principle applies: the woman being ridiculed may be far better and more virtuous in Allah's sight than the one who mocks her. How often do we judge others by their clothes, their wealth, or their looks, while Allah judges by the heart and the deeds?
Third, Allah commands: "Do not defame one another." This means do not find faults in your fellow believers, do not backbite, do not slander, and do not criticize others in a way that diminishes their dignity. The believers are like one body — when you defame your brother or sister, you are essentially defaming yourself. You are part of the same Ummah, the same family of faith.
Fourth, Allah prohibits calling one another by offensive nicknames. This was a practice among some people before Islam, where they would label others with derogatory titles based on their past sins, their physical features, or their family lineage. After embracing Islam, a person's past is forgiven and their identity is renewed. To remind them of their past or to label them with hurtful names is a grave injustice. A believer should be called by the best of names, not by titles that cause pain and humiliation.
Then Allah delivers a powerful rebuke: "Evil is the name of wickedness after faith." How terrible it is that a person who has been blessed with the light of faith — who has been guided from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge, from sin to righteousness — should then be described as a "sinner" or "wicked" because of their mocking, defaming, and name-calling! After the honor of faith, to engage in such lowly behavior is a disgrace. The believer's tongue should be pure, not a tool for hurting others.
Finally, Allah issues a stern warning: "And whoever does not repent — then those are the wrongdoers." Those who persist in mockery, defamation, and offensive name-calling without seeking forgiveness are the ones who wrong themselves. They harm their own souls, diminish their own ranks, and expose themselves to Allah's displeasure. The door of repentance is always open — Allah is ever ready to forgive those who turn back to Him with sincere hearts.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, reflect on the beauty of this divine guidance. Allah is teaching you that your tongue is a trust — use it to build, not to destroy. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe." Imagine a community where no one mocks another, where no one defames another, where no one calls others by hurtful names — what peace and brotherhood would prevail!
Islam elevates human dignity. Every believer is your brother or sister in faith, deserving of respect and kindness. When you are tempted to laugh at someone or point out their flaws, remember that Allah may love them more than He loves you. Their hidden virtues may far outweigh your visible ones.
Repent today if you have fallen into any of these sins. Allah's mercy is vast, and He loves those who turn back to Him. Let your tongue become a source of blessings — speak words of encouragement, praise, and love. Build bridges, not walls. And know that the best among you in Allah's sight are those who are best in character and conduct toward others.
May Allah purify our hearts, guard our tongues, and make us among those who uphold the dignity of every believer. Ameen.
