Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • An-Nazi'at (النازعات): The angels who pull out and extract souls with force.
  • Gharqan (غرقًا): Literally meaning "drowning" or "plunging deeply," here it signifies pulling out the soul with extreme force and intensity, as one would pull something from the depths of water.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) opens this powerful chapter with a solemn oath, swearing by the angels who tear out the souls of the disbelievers with violent force and harshness. These are the angels entrusted with extracting the souls of those who rejected faith, and they do so with such intensity that it is likened to drowning—pulling the soul out from the deepest recesses of the body with overwhelming strength.

This oath is a magnificent declaration of Allah's absolute power over life and death. He, the Creator of all things, swears by His noble angels who carry out His commands without hesitation, to affirm a truth of utmost importance: that the Resurrection will certainly occur, and every soul shall be held accountable for its deeds.

The very mention of these angels serves as a profound reminder of the reality that awaits every human being. Just as the angels extract souls at the moment of death—gently for the believers and harshly for the disbelievers—so too will all creation be raised anew for judgment. This is not a matter of doubt or speculation; it is an absolute certainty that Allah emphasizes through this mighty oath.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect deeply upon this verse. The One who swears by His angels is the same Lord who created you, sustains you, and knows every secret of your heart. He did not need to swear, but He did so out of His mercy, to emphasize the certainty of the Day of Judgment and to awaken your heart from heedlessness.

This is an invitation to prepare for that inevitable meeting with your Lord. The angels who extract souls with such force for the disbelievers are the same angels who will welcome the believers with gentleness and kindness. Which group do you wish to belong to? The choice is yours, and the time to make it is now, before the angel of death arrives. Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, embrace His guidance, and let the reminder of this oath be the turning point in your life—a life that leads to eternal bliss in His paradise, or a life of regret in the Hereafter. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open until the final moment. Do not delay; seize this opportunity today.
