Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Taaboo (تابوا): They repented and turned back from their disbelief and polytheism.
  • Aqaamoo al-Salaah (أقاموا الصلاة): They established the prayer, performing it correctly and consistently at its prescribed times.
  • Aatawoo al-Zakaah (آتوا الزكاة): They gave the obligatory charity (Zakaah) from their wealth.
  • Ikhwaanukum (إخوانكم): Your brothers.
  • Nufassil (نفصّل): We explain in detail and make clear.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse comes as a direct continuation of the previous command regarding how to deal with the polytheists who broke their covenants. Allah, the Most Merciful, opens a door of hope and reconciliation, teaching us that the door of repentance is always open for those who sincerely turn back to Him.

If these people who were previously engaged in hostility and shirk (associating partners with Allah) sincerely repent from their disbelief, declare the Oneness of Allah, and embrace Islam by uttering the testimony of faith, and if they establish the prayer with all its conditions and pillars, and pay the Zakaah on their wealth — then they have become your brothers in the religion of Islam. This brotherhood is not merely a verbal claim; it is a profound bond that carries full rights and responsibilities. They are entitled to the same rights you enjoy, and they bear the same obligations you bear. Their lives, their wealth, and their honour become sacred and protected. It is no longer permissible to fight them or treat them as enemies, because Islam has entered their hearts and their actions testify to their faith.

This verse beautifully illustrates the transformative power of repentance and faith. A person who was once an enemy of Islam can become a beloved brother within moments of sincere turning to Allah. Such is the beauty of this religion — it does not hold grudges, but rather welcomes every sincere soul with open arms.

Then Allah concludes by saying that He makes His signs clear and detailed for people who understand and reflect. These are the people who benefit from the divine guidance and, in turn, guide others. They are the ones whose hearts are open to the truth, who ponder over the wisdom of the revelations, and who act upon what they learn.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate the immense mercy embedded in this verse. Allah does not say "if they repent, then judge them by their past." Rather, He says they become your brothers — a term of love, equality, and mutual support. This is the spirit of Islam: a religion that builds bridges, heals divisions, and unites hearts under the banner of faith. When a person embraces Islam, their entire past is wiped clean, and they begin a new chapter filled with divine light and guidance.

Let this verse inspire us to be people of understanding, who reflect deeply on the signs of Allah, and who embody the beautiful brotherhood that Islam establishes among believers. May we always be quick to forgive, eager to welcome, and firm in our commitment to prayer and charity, for these are the pillars that uphold the unity of the Muslim community.

📜 Verse 9-13 — At-Tawbah

They have exchanged the signs of Allah for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.
They do not observe toward a believer any pact of kinship or covenant of protection. And it is they who are the transgressors.
But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, then they are your brothers in religion; and We detail the verses for a people who know.
And if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief, for indeed, there are no oaths [sacred] to them; [fight them that] they might cease.
Would you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are [truly] believers.
