Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse paints a stark and powerful picture of the reality of those who oppose the faith. Allah describes a group of people whose hearts have become so hardened in their hostility toward the believers that they have utterly abandoned every moral and human principle. They do not observe any bond of kinship with a believer, nor do they honor any covenant or pledge they have made. Even if a believer is their own relative, they will not spare them; even if they have given their word and entered into a treaty, they will break it without hesitation.
Their sole motivation is enmity and aggression. They are described as "the transgressors" — those who have crossed every boundary of decency, justice, and divine law. Their aggression is not limited to physical harm; it extends to breaking promises, severing family ties, and violating the sanctity of agreements. They are people who, if they gained power over you, would show no mercy and uphold no obligation.
This verse serves as a profound lesson for the believers: do not be naive about the nature of those who are openly hostile to your faith. While Islam teaches us to be just and kind even to our enemies, it also commands us to be wise and vigilant. We must not place our trust in people who have demonstrated, time and again, that they have no respect for kinship, covenants, or basic humanity when it comes to the believers.
At the same time, this verse is a call to reflect on our own character. As Muslims, we are the opposite of this description. We are commanded to honor our promises, maintain family ties, and treat others with justice and compassion — even those who differ from us. Our faith elevates us to a standard of nobility where our word is our bond, and our mercy extends to all creation. Let this verse inspire us to be the very embodiment of trustworthiness and integrity, so that we may never be counted among the transgressors, but rather among those whom Allah praises as the righteous.
