Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Mughirat (الْمُغِيرَاتِ): The horses that make a sudden raid or attack on the enemy, charging swiftly and fiercely.
  • Subhan (صُبْحًا): At dawn, the early morning time.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah continues the powerful oaths He takes by the war horses, describing their role in the third stage of their charge. After mentioning the horses that run breathlessly and strike sparks with their hooves, Allah now swears by those that make a sudden raid on the enemy at dawn.

The scene is one of a pre-dawn military operation: the horses and their riders move silently under the cover of darkness, then at the first light of morning, they launch a surprise attack upon the enemy. This timing is deliberate and strategic—catching the enemy off guard while they are still drowsy and unprepared, striking with full force and speed. The word "Subhan" (dawn) highlights the element of surprise and the discipline of the warriors who are willing to sacrifice their comfort and sleep for the sake of their mission.

This verse, and the oaths that precede it, serve as a profound reminder of the value of dedication, courage, and readiness in the path of truth. Just as these horses are trained, loyal, and swift in carrying out their duty, the believer is called to be equally devoted and swift in obeying Allah's commands and defending what is right. The imagery stirs the heart to reflect on how we use our own strength and resources—are we as eager and committed in our worship and good deeds as these horses are in their charge?

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply on this vivid scene. Allah swears by these magnificent creatures to draw your attention to something even greater: the reality of human ingratitude and the certainty of accountability. If a horse can be so loyal and so willing to exhaust itself for its master, how much more should you, a human being blessed with intellect and free will, be grateful to your Creator and obedient to His guidance? Let this verse inspire you to examine your own life—your speed in doing good, your courage in facing challenges, and your readiness to answer the call of your Lord at every "dawn" of opportunity. The same Allah who created these horses and made them serve their riders is the One who watches over you and calls you to a life of purpose and righteousness. Do not let your days pass in heedlessness; rather, be among those who race toward goodness, for the reward with Allah is far greater than any worldly victory.
