Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fa-atharna (فَأَثَرْنَ): They stirred up or raised.
  • Bihi (بِهِ): By means of it — referring to their running at that time and place.
  • Naq'an (نَقْعًا): Dust or dust clouds.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the vivid scene of warhorses charging into battle. After describing their panting breaths and the sparks struck by their hooves, Allah now tells us that these horses, in their swift and powerful gallop, raise clouds of dust that fill the air around them. The dust rises thick and heavy from the dry earth, stirred by the pounding of their hooves as they race forward with tremendous force and speed.

The imagery here is powerful and dynamic — it captures the intensity, the urgency, and the sheer energy of that moment. These are not ordinary horses taking a leisurely stroll; they are charging with full force, leaving behind a trail of dust that obscures the horizon. This scene serves as a profound reminder of the seriousness of the matter at hand — the reality of human ingratitude toward Allah and the certainty of accountability.

Reflection and Da'wah:

Beloved reader, contemplate how Allah swears by these mighty horses — creatures of strength and speed — to draw our attention to a truth far greater than any earthly spectacle. Just as the dust rises and then settles, so too will the fleeting affairs of this world come to an end. The very elements of nature — the panting breath, the striking sparks, the rising dust — all point to the power of the Creator who fashioned them all.

When you see dust being raised by any force — whether it be the wind, a passing vehicle, or galloping animals — let it remind you of this verse and the profound message it carries. Your life, like that dust, is temporary. But your deeds — good or bad — will be brought forth on the Day when hearts shall be turned upside down, and the secrets of every soul shall be laid bare.

Take a moment today to ask yourself: What dust am I raising in this world? Am I racing toward what pleases Allah, or am I merely chasing after the fleeting dust of worldly desires? The horses in this verse ran with all their might in service of their masters. How much more should we, as servants of the Most Merciful, strive with sincerity and dedication in His cause?

May Allah make us among those who race toward goodness and whose efforts are crowned with His pleasure. Ameen.

📜 Verse 2-6 — Al-'Adiyat

2فَالْمُورِيَاتِ قَدْحًا
And the producers of sparks [when] striking
3فَالْمُغِيرَاتِ صُبْحًا
And the chargers at dawn,
4فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا
Stirring up thereby [clouds of] dust,
5فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا
Arriving thereby in the center collectively,
6إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ
Indeed mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful.
