Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Zurtum (زُرْتُمُ): Literally means "you visited." In this context, it signifies the journey to the graves—i.e., death and burial.
  • Al-Maqābir (الْمَقَابِرُ): The graveyards or burial places.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse completes the picture painted in the first verse, where people are engrossed in accumulating wealth, status, and worldly gains. Here, Allah tells us that this obsessive pursuit continues until you visit the graves—meaning until you die and are laid to rest in your final earthly abode. The word "visit" is striking: it reminds us that the grave is not a permanent destination but a temporary stop on the journey to the Hereafter. You do not settle in the grave; you pass through it on your way to resurrection and judgment.

The verse is a profound wake-up call. It asks: *When will this relentless chase for more end?* The answer is: only at the edge of the grave. Yet, by then, it is too late to return and rectify what has been neglected. The grave is the first station of the afterlife—a place where the truth of our deeds becomes clear, and where the illusions of worldly competition fade into dust.

This is a gentle but firm reminder from your Lord: do not wait until you are lowered into the earth to realize the purpose of your existence. The grave is not a destination to be proud of visiting; it is a doorway to eternity. Let this verse stir your heart today—while you still have breath, while repentance is still accepted, and while you can still turn your "competition" into a race toward righteousness and the pleasure of Allah.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. If one is saved there, what follows is easier; if one is not saved there, what follows is harder." So, dear reader, let this verse be your companion: let the thought of your grave reform your deeds, soften your heart, and redirect your efforts toward what truly matters—meeting your Lord with a heart that is sound.
