Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- سُعِدُوا (su‘idū): Those who are blessed with happiness and success — i.e., the people of faith and righteous deeds whom Allah has decreed felicity for.
- خَالِدِينَ (khālidīn): Abiding eternally, without end.
- مَا دَامَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ (mā dāmat al-samāwātu wal-arḍ): As long as the heavens and the earth endure — an expression of perpetual, unending duration.
- إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ رَبُّكَ (illā mā shā'a Rabbuk): Except what your Lord wills — referring to the exception of sinful believers who will be purified in the Fire before entering Paradise.
- عَطَاءً غَيْرَ مَجْذُوذٍ (‘aṭā'an ghayr majdhūdh): A gift that is never cut off or interrupted — an eternal, continuous bestowal.
Explanation of the Verse:
After describing the painful fate of the wretched in the previous verse, Allah now turns to the blessed ones, filling the hearts of believers with hope and joy. Those whom Allah has decreed happiness for — through their sincere faith and righteous deeds — will be admitted into Paradise, where they will live forever. Their eternity is expressed in the most vivid terms: they will remain there as long as the heavens and the earth endure, which in the language of the Arabs signifies endless time.
The exception mentioned — “except what your Lord wills” — refers to a specific group: the sinful believers who carried faith in their hearts but fell into major sins. These individuals will not enter Paradise immediately; rather, they will remain in the Fire for a period determined by Allah’s justice and wisdom, until they are purified of their sins. Then, by Allah’s mercy and grace, they will be brought out and admitted into Paradise. This exception is not a threat to the righteous but a clarification of Allah’s perfect justice — no one enters Paradise except through His mercy, and no one is punished except for their own deeds.
Then the verse concludes with a magnificent promise: Allah’s gift to the blessed is غير مجذوذ — never cut off, never diminished, never ending. Unlike the pleasures of this world, which fade, expire, or lose their sweetness, the bliss of Paradise is perpetual and ever-renewing. It is a continuous outpouring of divine generosity that knows no limit and no interruption.
A Call to Faith and Action:
Dear believer, reflect on this glorious promise! Your Lord has opened the gates of eternal happiness for you — not because you deserve it by your deeds alone, but because His mercy encompasses all things. The key to this everlasting joy is simple: sincere faith and righteous action. Every prayer you offer, every charity you give, every kindness you show, every temptation you resist — these are the seeds of an eternity of bliss that never ends.
Do not let the temporary hardships of this world discourage you. The trials you face today are but moments in comparison to the endless joy that awaits. And if you have stumbled into sin, do not despair — the exception in this verse is a door of hope. Allah’s mercy is vast enough to purify you, and His grace is generous enough to admit you into His Paradise after your purification.
So strive, O servant of Allah, with hope in His mercy and fear of His justice. Let this verse be a source of motivation: Paradise is real, its bliss is eternal, and its doors are open for those who turn to their Lord with sincere hearts. May Allah make us among the blessed ones who will hear the call: “Enter Paradise — no fear upon you, nor will you grieve.”
