Word Meanings:
- Khālidīna fīhā: Abiding eternally therein, remaining forever.
- Mā dāmat al-samāwātu wal-arḍ: As long as the heavens and the earth endure — meaning perpetually, without end.
- Illā mā shā'a rabbuk: Except what your Lord wills — an exception referring to those whom Allah wills to bring out of the Fire, namely the sinful monotheists.
- Fa''ālun limā yurīd: Doer of whatever He wills — none can oppose or question His decree.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of the fate of the wretched — those who disbelieved and persisted in corruption. They will be cast into the Fire, where they will dwell forever, as long as the heavens and the earth endure — that is, for all eternity, with no break or end to their torment. Their punishment is perpetual and unceasing.
However, the verse contains a divine exception: *"except what your Lord wills."* This exception refers to the sinners among the believers — those who upheld the Oneness of Allah but fell into major sins without repentance. These individuals will enter the Fire due to their sins, but they will not remain there forever. After a period of purification, Allah — in His mercy and justice — will bring them out through the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ and the believers, and they will enter Paradise. This is a manifestation of Allah's absolute sovereignty: He does as He pleases, and none can question His decree. He is the Doer of whatever He wills — whether it be eternal punishment for the disbelievers or eventual mercy for the sinful believers.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this verse. It reveals two profound truths: the absolute justice of Allah — for the disbelievers who rejected the truth and oppressed themselves, there is eternal punishment; and His boundless mercy — for the believers who stumbled into sin, there is hope of deliverance after purification. This is not a contradiction; it is the perfect balance of justice and grace.
How beautiful is Islam that it does not leave the sinner in despair! The door of repentance remains open until death. If you have fallen into sin, do not lose hope — turn back to your Lord, for He is *Fa''ālun limā yurīd* — He can forgive, He can transform your state, and He can admit you into His eternal mercy. But beware of persisting in disbelief or arrogance, for that path leads to an eternity of regret.
Let this verse be a call to you: embrace the truth now, purify your heart with faith and good deeds, and seek Allah's forgiveness. For the One who is the Doer of whatever He wills is also the One who says, *"Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins."* (Az-Zumar 39:53). Run to Him before the curtain falls, and you will find Him most ready to receive you.
