Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿasā (عَسَىٰ): "Perhaps" or "it is hoped" — used in the Qur'an to indicate a promise of mercy that is certain to occur when its conditions are met.
- ḥaṣīran (حَصِيرًا): Derived from *ḥaṣara* (to confine/restrict). It means a prison, a place of confinement, or a bed/mat that encloses one from all sides — leaving no escape.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Children of Israel, after the severe punishment and humiliation you faced for your corruption and transgression, your Lord holds out to you a door of hope: if you repent sincerely, turn back to Him, and mend your ways, He will have mercy upon you and restore your dignity and honor. This mercy is not a mere possibility — it is a divine promise that will surely be fulfilled for those who truly repent.
But the verse carries a stern warning alongside the hope: "And if you return [to transgression], We will return [to punishment]." This is a fixed, unchangeable law of Allah — a reciprocal justice. If you revert to spreading corruption, breaking covenants, and rejecting Allah's messengers, then His punishment will return to you as well. History bears witness to this: when the Children of Israel returned to disobedience after being shown mercy, Allah sent punishment upon them again, and they were scattered and humiliated.
Then the verse concludes with a sobering reality: "And We have made Hellfire for the disbelievers a prison." Just as a prison confines its inmates with no way out, so too will Hellfire enclose the disbelievers — those who reject Allah's signs, deny His messengers, and persist in disbelief — with no escape, no exit, and no relief. It is a place of eternal confinement, a bed that surrounds them from every direction, and a fate from which there is no deliverance.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is not merely a historical account addressed to the Children of Israel — it is a timeless lesson for all of humanity, including this Muslim nation. The laws of Allah are constant and never change. If a people are blessed with honor, victory, and mercy, and then they turn to sin, disobedience, and corruption, they must know that the same divine justice applies to them. The punishment of Allah is not limited to any one nation or era.
Yet, the beauty of this verse lies in its balance: it does not leave the sinner in despair. The door of repentance is wide open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. No matter how great your sins, if you turn back to your Lord with a sincere heart, He will forgive you, elevate you, and grant you His mercy. But do not be deceived into thinking that His mercy means He overlooks persistent, unrepentant sin — for His justice is equally certain.
Let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. Ask yourself: Am I among those who repent and reform, or among those who persist and transgress? The choice is yours, and the outcome is clear — mercy and honor for the repentant, and a prison of fire for the disbelievers. Choose the path of repentance today, before the door closes and the time for return passes. For Allah is Most Merciful to those who seek His mercy, and His punishment is severe against those who reject His signs and persist in wrongdoing.
