Word Meanings:

  • Al-Fityah (الْفِتْيَةُ): The young men; the plural of *fata*, meaning a youth of complete strength, vitality, and sound judgment.
  • Awa (أَوَى): To seek refuge, to retreat, or to turn to a place for safety and shelter.
  • Min ladunka (مِن لَّدُنكَ): From Your very presence; meaning from Your grace and mercy that comes directly from You, without any intermediary.
  • Hayyi' (هَيِّئْ): To prepare, arrange, or make easy and suitable.
  • Rashadan (رَشَدًا): Right guidance, correctness, uprightness, and the ability to follow the path of truth with wisdom and insight.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah Almighty recounts the story of the young believers who fled with their faith to a cave, escaping the persecution and coercion of their people who sought to force them into idol worship. These were youths of strong conviction who chose to abandon their homes, families, and comforts rather than compromise their belief in the Oneness of Allah.

When they entered the cave, they did not rely solely on their own strength or planning. Instead, they turned to their Lord with a humble and sincere supplication, acknowledging their complete dependence on Him. They asked for two essential things:

First, they begged for mercy from Allah — a mercy that would encompass them, protect them from evil, forgive their shortcomings, and grant them steadfastness in the face of trials. They understood that without His mercy, they could not endure the hardships ahead.

Second, they asked Allah to prepare for them right guidance in their affair — meaning to make their path easy, to grant them wisdom and correctness in their decision to flee, and to lead them to actions that would please Him. They sought not just safety, but spiritual success and uprightness in every step they took.

This beautiful supplication teaches us a profound lesson: when we face difficulties in preserving our faith, we must combine action with prayer. The youths took the practical step of fleeing to the cave, but they also recognized that ultimate success comes only from Allah. Their words reflect a deep trust in Allah's wisdom and a sincere desire to remain on the straight path.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look at the character of these young believers! They were not weak or cowardly; rather, they were wise and courageous. They understood that true honor lies in obedience to Allah, even if it means sacrificing worldly comforts. Their story is a timeless reminder that Allah never abandons those who sincerely turn to Him. When you find yourself in difficult circumstances, remember this dua and make it your own: *"Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."*

This supplication is a key to unlocking Allah's help in every situation — whether you are facing trials in your faith, your work, your family, or your personal struggles. Allah, the Most Merciful, is always near, always ready to answer the call of those who call upon Him with sincerity. So, turn to Him with a humble heart, and He will surely guide your steps, protect you from harm, and grant you success in this life and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Kahf

And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground.
Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?
[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."
So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.
Then We awakened them that We might show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating what [extent] they had remained in time.
